... how do you know when your LO has a fever? Is it just like an adult and their forehead is extra warm to the touch?

I can tell when F has a fever by her behavior (extra fussy/tired), and touch. They definitely get WARM when they're feverish.

B's whole body gets warm when he has a fever. He also gets extra fussy and snugly.

Their bodies usually feel warm, too, but I would also use a thermometer to check.

C definitely feels warm to the touch. That combined with signs of sick (fussy, crabby, extra sleepy or sleeping poorly).

They feel warm but I use a rectal thermometer to check.

I always do forehead to forehead as a check before I do a thermometer. If DD or DS feels hotter than me then I know to double check with a thermometer.

I can tell they have a fever by placing my lips on their forehead. Body also feels warmer than usual.

Thanks, everyone. DS has had a cold for over a week now, but he's never felt warm. Just wanted to make sure because when I called his pediatrician they asked if he'd had a fever and I was pretty sure he hadn't.
@chopsuey: That's so sweet!

@Katrocap: Kiss checks totally work. If you put your lips to their forehead, it'll feel hot if they have a fever.

@maisymay: Thanks for the tip. I guess I'm lucky. DS is almost 10 months and has never had a fever.

@chopsuey: I kiss M's forehead to see if she has a fever, too. Daycare taught me that. Lol.

Ditto on kissing the forehead. My Grams was a nurse for 50 years and always told me it was a more accurate gauge of temperature than using your hand. If I think he feels too warm from that then I follow up with a rectal thermometer.

@Katrocap: My LO had a fever one time and when I touched her head, she was literally ON FIRE. I have felt her head and thought she was warm enough to warrant a temp check, and she was always just on the higher side of the normal range. The one time she had fever (roseola), she was at 102 when I felt her (she was fussing a lot), and I was like, "OMG, she is burning up, we have to RUN home and take her temp." She was 102. But even with Tylenol over the next couple of days she would hover in the low 100s/101s and I always thought she felt SO HOT.
