My lil J is 5 months and has started sucking her thumb here and there. Esp at night in the crib. Im very very anti thumb sucking! So, my luck our first baby is all about it. Every time I see her with it in her mouth I remove it and give her the pacifier. She is just starting teething....any advice!?

Sucking can help relieve the pressure of teething. Sometimes my LO will wake up to nurse to make her gums feel better. During the day though she just chews on her fingers. She refuses to take a paci, so I've just let it be.

My LO refused the paci, she's all about her thumb. I don't think there's much you can do about it. It soothes her, it helps her sleep, it makes her happy. Therefore it makes me happy.

@crystbum: Out of curiosity, why are you anti thumb sucking? My daughter started doing it when she was 6 months but at 15 months, I haven't asked her to kick the habit. I am hoping she quits on her own.

Anyone we've asked about thumb sucking has said that it's great that DS can self-soothe and not to worry about it. DS only sucks his thumb when he's teething, sick or very tired.

LO started sucking her thumb at 3 months and she was able to self-soothe herself to sleep. She's 15 months right now and still sucks her thumb to sleep or for comfort. Our pediatrician said it's fine until she's about 4-5 years old. For now, I'm okay with her sucking her thumb.

Can I just say that I'm 26 years old, married and pregnant with my first child and still *very very rarely* suck my thumb....I just never could break the habit. It was much worse when I was younger. My parents tried everything in the book to get me to stop and I couldn't.
Ok now I'm totally embarrassed!

I'm honestly super grateful that DD sucks her thumb. She self soothes! It's great! At 4 months, she does a better job putting herself to sleep than I used to! I feel like I struck gold!
I should probably be concerned about it when she's older, but I figure we'll tackle it then. If anything, it'll be a quirk that makes her all the more love-able (plus I can think of a lot worse habits)!

I've just read a lot of negative things about dry and sore skin on thumbs as well as buck teeth and issues with teeth due to thumb sucking. I had a friend who sucked her thumb as a child and to this day still needs to have something in her mouth! With the pacifier, I know someday I can just take that away...her thumb is always going to be there!

I think every baby/child has a way of comfort, a blanket, stuffed animal, thumb sucking or pacifier...I wouldn't worry with her being so young.

I'm very anti thumb sucking as well. M started at about 2 months and although she doesn't do it constantly I still worry it will become a habit. I pull it out and say no every single time I see it.
She doesn't do it for self soothing bc she never does it at bed or nap time. Nor consistently enough. She just puts everything in her mouth including her fingers, fist and thumb.My husbands niece is 3 and she is constantly sucking her thumb. It has caused her teeth to push out and her ped has told them to get her to quit or the condition will worsen!

I was hoping to make DD a paci baby rather than a thumb baby, but she just jumped ship on the paci at 5 months as has ZERO interest in it anymore. C'est la vie I suppose.
