I did not know before blood work, but my doctor knew right away when we discussed symptoms I was having. I am always cold, had some weight gain, fatigued, and unusual cycles.

I didn't know either, but I was also often cold, had weight gain, and was often tired. All OBs should check for it occasionally, since it is so common.

@seabsher: @Mrs.Someone: What kind of weight gain are you guys talking? I've probably gained 10-15 lbs over the last couple years but am still a normal weight. I can't do anything at all to lose it through. Any cycle issues?

I gained something like 10-15 pounds too. I also felt thick/heavy, if that makes sense. As soon as I began taking medicine I lost some weight (not all of it, but some), and did not feel as thick/heavy. Yes, I have/had cycle issues. It was never the same length of time between cycles, or sometimes missed, etc.

I can't lose weight and it stays the same - whether I'm eating entirely healthy or not, doing crossfit or any exercise or not. My cycle are on the longer side (31ish days?) so I don't know if that can be anything.

@LindsayInNY: Mine are on the long side too (35 days, usually). I also have fertility issues, and that is one of the main reasons the GYN started to question the thyroid issue.

@seabsher: We're also have issues and all testing has come back normal so far (CD3, HSG, SA). Just waiting on progesterone results. I have a physical scheduled in a couple weeks. I was on BC last time so the results wouldn't have been accurate, I guess.

It was a total surprise to me when my bloodwork came back, although when I looked back at my charts it started to make sense that my temps had been so low for a while.

I knew. dry skin, hair fell out, always tired, gained weight, couldn't lose weight. didnt know it was thyroid but knew SOMETHING was wrong
honeydew / 7916 posts
@LindsayInNY: My pre-O temps went from around 97.5-6 at a time when my thyroid b/w was definitely good to 97.0-3.
ETA: The two tests were a couple months apart, so it can change that quickly.

@spaniellove: My pre-O temps are in the low to mid 97s...
@wheres_c: What kind of weight gain and over what period of time?

I had no idea until they told me it came back with my blood work. But, It makes sense. I think I may always have had it because I'm always cold with no energy. I wish I had known earlier!

@LindsayInNY: I didn't have cycle issues but I was sleeping 20 hours a day and still tired, my hair fell out in clumps, I was heavy even though I worked out every day and ate 1500 calories a day.

@LindsayInNY: it was one of the first things my RE tested for. My PCP had tested for it, too. I gained about 30lbs coming off the pill and couldn't get it off. Also always tired and cold, and my cycles were 90+ days long. My thyroid tests were normal but I was diagnosed with PCOS.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I wish they had checked for it right away. I have a physical in a couple of weeks so I'll be sure it is then.

I was sure I was pregnant! Both times I had pregnancy symptoms- missing/ late period, bloating, overweight, tired...

@kml636: me too. I have always had it I think
it can cause so much trouble and I wish they had checked my earlier before things got worse. My mom also has it so... check me people! Check me.
I am also always cold and have fatigue. All.the.time. It can cause brain fog, depression, my nails are thin. Shitty. (I am on meds but my doc wasn't checking me and I just found out I am hypo again.)

@Mrs. Jump Rope: omg I also gained going off the pill. I never made the connection before!

I put on 20+ lbs when they tested me for mine. that wasn't the case but it was a high chance because of family history. My dr wasn't sure the blood test was right so she had me go for a thyroid u/s too in order to confirm

I actually lost wt w no change in lifestyle (was already 'underwt' for ht and lost an additional 10 over 9 mths) and they ordered bloodwork at my annual in my mid 20s. They also said trace anemia. I have longish cycles as well (36 days when we got bfp w ds)

@babycanuck: I didn't know you had thyroid issues! There's no family history of it so I don't know if I'm making this up now or what. I'm still a healthy weight but have gained a good 15 lbs. over the last couple of years. Been at the same weight for a while now and can't drop any of it.
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@LindsayInNY: as far as the dr is concerned I don't, but she was worried because of all the weight I put on and EVERY woman in my family has something.
I wouldn't be overly concerned about 15 lbs over a couple of years but ask your doc to test you anyway for it. My weight gain was 20-25 lbs year 1 and another 30 year 2

@babycanuck: My concern is also the inability to lose weight. My weight will not budge, regardless of how healthy I eat or work it. It's really frustrating.

I had no idea. I didn't really have any of the symptoms of it. I did have some trouble losing weight, but I figured that was just my metabolism. I found out when my doctor did a blood panel looking for possible reasons I wasn't ovulating and my TSH was 12.44.
I will say though that between Synthroid and Metformin I find I have slightly more energy and my metabolism seems much faster.

My dad is a doctor, and knew something was up with my mom's thyroid when she gained 30lbs really quickly, and couldn't lose it no matter what. She was also really fatigued. Got checked out, and yep overactive thyroid. Not sure about her cycles.
