After numerous infections for the last two years, our almost 3-year-old will be having a tonsillectomy on Friday. He’s not great at taking medicine and has a very strong personality, so I’m a little bit nervous about the surgery and the postop. Does anyone have any good tips for preparing him for the surgery and for recovery? Bonus points for tips on getting a kid to take medicine or take drinks at night without them throwing up.

No tips but he should recover quickly at this age. I did it as a mid 20 something and it was horrible recovery but one of the best things i ever did for my health! So i won’t hesitate to do it if/when my girls need it.

No tips for medicine but hopefully he bounces back quickly!
FWIW, my sister had hers taken out at 2 years old and was eating normal foods the next day. I had mine out at 20 and it took almost 2 weeks for me to fully recover (I also had a frenulectomy that needed stitches so that didn’t help my recovery).

My 3yo just had his tonsils and adenoids out in October. RE: medicine, dose before you think he's ready, have a cup of cold water to drink before and after the medicine. After about a week, he didn't like the medicine anymore so maybe have different flavors so he doesn't get used to any one flavor. After I got a new flavor, he was okay again. My son never had a problem drinking after the surgery, so medicine wasn't that bad until he decided he didn't like "berry" anymore. We alternated Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 4 hours for the first 4 days and then went to about every 6 hours for 3ish days and then only ibuprofen every 8 hours for another 5 days.
The most successful meal was ice cream for the first 2 days. Cold mac n cheese was also successful for a day or 2. Yogurt, both cold and frozen was good. Soggy cheerios starting about day 3. He was eating goldfish and slices of turkey by day 5.
I heard day 7-10 gets bad again, but that wasn't our experience. He went to school for a half day (2 hours) on day 9 and was back to his regular schedule on day 12.
Overall, it was easier than I anticipated. I prepared for the worst and it wasn't that bad. And the surgery was totally worth it bc it really helped his problem (snoring and disruptions in his breathing while he was sleeping). I hope he does okay!
