My husband is SUPER handy around the house. I'm not so much...but I'm a really good helper. I'm looking to put up some floating shelves. We have attempted them once before in a closet and ended up needing to use brackets to hold them up because they kept falling over...
What are your tips for hanging floating shelves? These are going in the family room so they can't have metal brackets up to hold them in place.

Make sure you screw the supports in to studs!
Or use those things you screw in to the wall and then screw the screws in for extra support (no idea what these are called lol).

@mediagirl: we got Target ones and it came with all the hardware. I think DH might have added a recessed thingie mahbob or used butterfly screws. haha

Is your wall standard 2x4 construction with studs and sheetrock? If so, then you can use a stud finder to find a stud and then measure 16 inches for the next one.
Gypsum is really strong, BUT i feel more secure using anchors if we're not able to attach directly to a stud.

@looch: yep, standard construction. We put the shelf in the closet up over the door so I think we just didn't have the studs available in that area. That is probably what caused our problems! Thanks for the tip, I think I'll feel a bit more comfortable now as long as we can find studs.

We have floating shelves in our dining room. We got the ones from IKEA and they hold up pretty well. No brackets required.

SO we got two floating shelves from Target (on clearance! hollllaaaaa) when we were setting up C's nursery. Set up the first shelf, no problem (used a stud finder, included hardware, etc.).
However, we ran into issues on the second wall. Found studs. Installed hardware. Shelf. would. not. hang. Tried taking off the first shelf, wouldn't hang. Hung the 2nd shelf on the first wall and it was fine.
Turns out our FRIGGING WALL is curved. So we were screwed on the 2nd wall, no matter what. Just make sure that you don't have a screwed up wall like we did and you'll be fine!

@mediagirl: DH made and hung floating shelves in E's room. I know he took pictures of each step (I'm not sure what he intended to use them for) so I can post them once I get home if you're interested. I think the key really is to screw them into studs. Ours aren't placed exactly where I wanted them because of the spacing of the studs.
