We are going on a mini vacation tomorrow through Monday. It's the first time we are going away with DS who is 8.5 months. Any tips on sharing a room with a baby? He goes to bed at 6:30, what do you do after baby is asleep? Do you sit with the lights out in silence? He goes down fairly easily and is a pretty deep sleeper, so we could probably watch TV on a low volume. We'll also have our video monitor so we could maybe leave the room....although I'd feel a little weird about that!!

Easy! We have traveled many times during the first year of DS life in hotel rooms and we try to put his crib in the bathroom! We also use white noise in the bathroom with him which helps a lot.

Since we've got two kids, if we can't get a hotel suite with a separate sitting area, we put the kids to bed and sit in the bathroom. Haha. But usually we try to book one of those extended stay suites.

We always opted for a suite set up so LO was in the living area and we could close the doors and stay in the bedroom/bathroom area. But during naps we put the pack and play in the bedroom/bathroom area so we could go in and out of the room...and we would just use the lobby bathroom

we just play multiple white noise on our phones and go about our business. watching tv on laptops/ipads with headphones helps too! we've never had a problem sleeping with two kids on different bedtimes in one hotel room thanks to trusty white noise.

Haven't had much trouble having her in the pnp with us. She's a sound sleeper and doesn't wake up to tv or conversation noise.

@petunia354: we're also sharing a hotel room for the first time this weekend with LO, who's almost 8 months old. we plan on draping an A+A blanket or two over the pack n play and cranking up the white noise. then we'll chill out and watch tv quietly after he falls asleep or read a book.

We've generally tried to get a suite, but the white noise machine (or app on DW's phone) has been a lifesaver. Reading/watching things on iPads with headphones has also worked well.

we usually try to put the pnp in the closet, if it is big enough. even if it isn't, we'll put it halfway in and try to drape a sheet over the top of the doors (if its french doors) so that its like her own little room. then we stick the noise machine in there.

We did the two room suite (separate living area and bedroom). I see you can't do that though...what about getting 2 adjoining rooms? I'd try to squeeze the p and p into the closet and also ask for a crib b/c that could be smaller.

We're sharing a hotel room with our 14 month old right now as we're on holiday for the week. We moved her PnP off to the corner of the room and threw a shirt over the furthest bedside lamp from her so that the light is somewhat dim. We're not really tv people, so that's not an issue, and we just talk in low voices. She hasn't had any trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. We also spend nap times sitting on the balcony as her daytime sleep isn't as deep as her night time sleep and we don't want to wake her.
We also go downstairs (one floor down) to the guest lounge of our building (we're in a five star, swanky resort that has separate lounges for each part of the complex) and have a tea or just relax for a little bit whilst LO sleeps in our room. I am surprisingly comfortable with this idea and we haven't had any issues. I don't know that I would do it just anywhere but we're in Bali, a place known for their love of children, staying at a secure, upscale resort where security is airtight, and I just feel comfortable leaving her for a little bit whilst she sleeps.

My daughter sleeps on a floorbed, so I bought her an ikea circus tent for our last long trip. She went to sleep in it, we turned on the while noise, and closed it up. We still had to be quiet, but we could have the lights on and use our tablets in bed. We even felt like we had enough privacy to have some adult time. It was really great.

So far we use the white noise machine and keep lights as dark/dim as possible. When she was 3.5 months, every little sound, even a door creak or a toilet flushing, would wake her up. We just did another trip and DH was able to have the TV on very low. I just passed out to be honest! Our next trip, we are getting a hotel with a separate room (like a suite, I suppose?)

Depending on the room configuration, try to put the crib as far away from your bed as possible, but also avoid the area near the door as hotel hallways can be loud. When DS was that young, we would tiptoe around with low light for about an hour after he went to sleep and then we could turn on more lights, the tv, order room service, etc. If you have the monitor, go to the hotel bar for a drink!
Since he is so young, what about taking an evening stroll and hope he falls asleep in the stroller? This wouldn't have worked with our DS since he rarely slept in the stroller, and I would always be envious of parents with babies sleeping in their strollers.

@Foodnerd81: How cool is that?!?! Such a long trek from the States but totally worth it! We are definitely enjoying it - we just spent four days in Jimbaran (southwestern part of the island) and are now on the island of Nusa Lembongan for the next five days. Bali is so amazing and it's great to hear that you loved it just as much as we're loving it! We've seen honeymooners everywhere and it just makes my heart melt a bit to see all these shiny, happy in love newlyweds - bless!

Thanks ladies!! I just remembered that we have a balcony/patio so as long as the nights aren't too cool we can hang out there. I casually mentioned putting the travel crib in the bathroom while we hung out in the main room to DH and he just about had a fit but then when I read him some of your responses he realized that maybe I wasn't crazy, lol.
I think this will be a good opportunity for us to read/go to bed early rather than staying up late and zonking out to the TV. Vacation here we come!!
