LO is 17 months and has started doing this ? When he gets mad at us (like if we take something from him) he gets mad and will bite his own hand ??!! It's like he doesn't know what to do with himself but he just needs to do something ? Help! I hate this ! It doesn't happen often but once a day for sure:(
Also- he's getting his molars and has been particularly mouthy anyway. But- he is not a biter (yet).

DS (20 months) just started doing this (a couple times over the past few days), when he's really upset about something. I think he just needs to get his anger/frustration out!

The LO I nannied used to do this right at this age, or she would bite the toy that was making her mad. If it was a toy making her upset (it was stuck, tangled up, etc) I would say "it's not okay to bite when you're angry, if you need help say 'Help Please' and I will help you" if she was biting herself I would again say that it's not okay to bite when she is angry, why don't you look at a book to cool down. She had a lot of receptive language but she had maybe 5 words at that time. It was all I could think to do to try & help her

@Mrs. Sunshine: DS is very verbal and understands us pretty well so we have been trying to tell him it's not ok to bite. It makes me feel awful when he does it ! Books are a good distraction
I also think he's testing his limits with us. He's started telling us NO!!!! a lot. Along with shaking his finger at us. Each time we say "you don't tell mommy and daddy no no " . Ohhhh someone tell me we are not already in the "terrible two" category !!!!

@coacheswife123: it's hard telling them no for it because I understand that it is just a way to let out frustration that you don't know what do with so I always tried to offer an alternative thing she could do to cool off.
I think him telling you no is normal. You tell him no, he probably thinks it works both ways!

@coacheswife123: my LO gets "flappy" when he is frustrated which sometimes ends in him hitting himself which is sort of similar. We actually encourage him to use his words, even I'd that includes no, and vocalize what's wrong. If it's a clear problem we try to narrate what is going on "I know you're frustrated we took the keys away from you; they're not a toy" in the hopes that it will build his emotional vocab. The use your words bit is the only thing that seems to help him right now.

@coacheswife123: LO does the same thing.. Or she will bite the couch or the rug. I haven't found anything to help to be honest. It's like she just has to get her frustration out. Sometimes I can guess correctly, "you're mad we didn't read that book." Or "you're mad I moved the bear?" And she will say "yes" and we can fix it! But I'm thinking it's mainly just normal for this age!
