LO was enjoying trying to dive bomb off the big poster bed, head first. She thought it was 'fun' having me catch her and tell her not to do it. So I gave her timeout which worked in the end.
I'm hopefully preventing her from doing it in the future.
Do you give time outs for safety infractions? How did it go? Did they try again when you weren't looking?

We are struggling with this too. She doesn't really understand timeouts yet though.

Absolutely. We do time outs for unsafe behavior. Then we try to prevent the behavior. So we would close the door to the bedroom. Though, we also think he will learn if he gets hurt. So we let a lot of things slide that some people might not.

I mostly just prevent access to unsafe activities. Can you exclude her from the room until she's older?

Pretty much one of the only things DD gets a timr out for is repeatedly doing something unsafe after we've asked her not to. It works pretty well; she usually stops after a time out.

I can't exclude her from the room...it's in her room. I know crazy, we barely used a crib, co-slept and now she's in a huge bed with sides. Anyway, I tried a time out to get her to help clean up tonight. Didn't work as well and I was pretty half hearted. Discipline sure is a puzzle to figure out, because I never grew up with any!

@808love: Have you heard of the Love and Logic discipline approach? I've found it works really well in situations like defiance with DD. The basic idea is that all actions have consequences, either positive or negative. In the situation of defiance or refusing to help, the consequence might be that you don't have enough time to do something special with your DD because you had to spend all of your time cleaning up her toys. So, for example, our kids get to play for a little while after dinner, before bedtime. If DD doesn't help us clean up her toys before bedtime, though, we might only have time to read her one story before bed. If she helps, we might have time to read her two stories, tell her a couple made-up stories, sing some songs, etc... our old daycare uses this approach starting with toddlers, and I've seen it work with kids as young as 15 months.

I don't think timeouts would work with my 23mo yet. I try to redirect whenever possible. At her playgroup one way they practice gross motor skills is jumping from a foam platform onto a huge pile of floor pillows. Not surprisingly she wanted to jump at home too. So we tell she can only jump when we pile our blankets and pillows on the floor for her. I guess this instance isn't really redirection, but she understands safe vs unsafe. Good luck!

@mrsmate: Timeouts usually work for LO but I don't want to get into the 'excessive use of timeouts' category so it keeps working. I like that you have an alternate way for her to have fun jumping. @Honeybee: I'll check out that book. Thanks for all the help, Ladies.
