I would let them sleep but have medicine and thermometer prepared for the inevitable wake up. If it continues through the night or gets worse I would likely call the after hours line and/or see a doctor tomorrow.

Poor kid I think I'd let him sleep but probably peek in a couple of times just to make sure he looks ok (for no reason other than I'm a crazy mom).

Definitely let sleep. We keep a small teacup with Tylenol and Motrin pre-measured and a Thermos of ice water in the hallway whenever DS is sick (we even buy one med in grape and one in cherry or bubble gum so we can keep them straight!). Makes the wake ups much easier. If it's something like roseola there's not much else you can do for a few days until the fever breaks and you get the rash. But you probably want to rule out ear infections.

@HappyBaker: our older kid was sick a ton this year so we had to figure out shortcuts. We also installed push lights in the hallway and in DS' room (whatever cheap ones they have at Amazon with picture hanging command strips). They emit a low intensity light that doesn't blind anyone and keeps DS sleepy but it's enough light to see meds and diaper changes.

@Mrs D: I did the same thing- sneak in and feel her or take temp with the forehead one but I never woke her up.

@gingerbebe: premeasuring is so smart. I can't believe I never thought of that. The best I've done is make sure we have clean medicine cups or syringes in the kitchen.

@HappyBaker: good luck tonight! I would also try to sneak a temp or just feel and make a judgement call. High temps make me nervous. I hate waking him but if he was burning up I might panic and do it.

I let her sleep... If she isn't feeling well/meds wore off, she'd wake us up for sure.

Like other mommies, I voted sleep. They'll wake when the med wears off and start to feel uncomfortable. You can re-dose then.

@HappyBaker: I think someone else mentioned it, but this is pretty much exactly what happened with T just after his 1st birthday. The fever kept spiking to 104.7 or so for 3 days. It came down to maybe 102.5 on meds. It broke at the end of day 3 and we thought we were in the clear. 24 hours later he broke out in a horrible rash. Roseola. It wasn't fun but there wasn't much we could do. Benadryl seemed to help the discomfort from the rash slightly. Luckily O (2.5 months younger) never got it somehow.
