My DS is 5.25 months. I just weighed him on a baby scale and he clocks in at 21 lbs. According to the CDC chart, this is above 95th percentile for weight! I breastfeed and supplement with formula maybe two bottles (5 oz. each) a week.
Is my LO too crazy big? At his 4 month appt he was 90th percentile for weight and the pedi was not concerned.

95th isn't off the charts. It's high, but still on there. Plus, since he was high at 4 months, he's probably just a big baby.
He'll level off once he starts crawling and walking. They gain a lot slower then.

Not concerning at all. Keep breastfeeding! That is awesome. It has actually been shown that children who are in a higher percentile on the growth chart at a young age, end up being thinner adults. Keep doing what you are doing

@dandelion: @claire.peonies: Thanks for the reassurance! That's what I've been thinking, too. I was reading a forum on BabyCenter with a similar question and all the comments were saying the mom shouldn't feed the baby as much, that big babies are fat not healthy, etc and it was freaking me out!

95th percentile isn't off the charts. Some babies are going to be that big and that's ok! I wouldn't worry especially if your ped isn't concerned. Keep doing what you're doing!

My DD was 21lbs2oz and I think 29" tall at her 6 month appointment. Shes 14 months now and just now 25lbs. Shes super tall and skinny!
I wouldnt worry too much, as long as hes on his curve.
Whoever said big babies are just fat needs to be kicked in the shin!

Is he height weight proportional? Are you feeding him according to hunger, and not to some specific amount? If so, I'd just call it good, and know that he's a big, healthy kid.

My DD is similar, 98.6% in weight. She's over 99% in height. Our pediatrician said he'd only be concerned if her weight was grossly disproportionate with her height, like a 99% weight and a 5% height.
If you look at 100 perfectly normal healthy babies, one of them will be the biggest.

I would think that you don't need to supplement with bottles though... sounds like your LO is doing fine on just the breast milk.

@zippylef: How interesting that your LO gained 4 lbs in 8 months. I've just been wondering how BIG my DS will get if he continues to gain at the rate he is. But I guess he'll slow down when he becomes mobile.
@sarac: He is height-weight proportional and we do feed him according to hunger.
@mrs.jacks: My milk took awhile to come in, so we started supplementing with formula when DS was 5 days old. I wasn't good at pumping at first once my milk did come in and I had PPD, so we continued using formula every so often so I could get a break. I'm better at pumping now, but we use formula in emergencies. It took us 5 months to go through one can of formula, so we don't even use that much.

I was told to look at the growth curve so if he's always been a big boy in the 90th percentile your pediatrician probably won't be concerned unless he jumps dramatically. Are you just using your home scale? They might end up with a slightly diff weight at the doctors office too.

My lo has always been around 90th percentile for height and weight. As long as she stays on the curve the doctors are happy.

@Katrocap: Growth definitely slows down A LOT when they hit 6 months old. My DD flew through NB-6 months sizes, was in 6-9 by 4 months old and then wore 9m for almost 5 months. In the first 6 months, she gained 10lbs10oz and grew 7". In the following 8 months, she has gained 4lbs and 3 inches taller. Shes still 90th and above in percentiles in everything. She wears 12-18m in weight ranges but is tall enough for 18-24m, which creates an awkward siatuation for her pants. Lol
Her pediatrician has never been concerned. He just said that she is very tall and he would expect her to be heavy to go along with it. She grows on her curve andhes happy with that.

My LO, at 2 years old, was 95% for weight, and 85% for height. Ped was not concerned at all- he's totally in line with where he's always been on the curve, he eats well and healthfully and runs around nonstop. It's all good.
