DD is 5.5 and has her first lose tooth! DH and I were talking about how much money the tooth fairy will leave but couldn't come to an agreement. It's not that we really disagree, we just aren't sure how much is the "norm."
So I'm curious, if you do the tooth fairy in your house how much money does she give LO? Is it more for the first tooth or the same for all? Or if you don't do money but do something else - what?

Hah - we do money and it has ranged from a few dollars to 10 depending on what I have in my wallet!!! I think anything you want to do is fine and will be the norm for your kid going forward. Mine doesn't seem at all phased by the varying amounts she has received.

My girls are convinced the tooth fairy brings “gold coins” ... which makes it easy for me as a Canadian - I give them a loonie or toonie (1$ or 2$ Coin) and call it a day 
The tooth fairy also place a couple gold chocolate coins under all the kids pillows (no matter who actually lost the tooth). Not exactly the most tooth healthy thing but they all look forward to it.

We did $5 first tooth and $2 second tooth (but she knocked that one out when she fell so if was a little traumatic) so $5 first then probably 1-2 after. If I had gold coins I would do that! Dh suggests $20 🙄 and I was thinking a dollar isn’t enough so idk. I think we only got 50c as a kid? My husband claims he got at least a dollar which I don’t believe

Just a dollar! Also, pro tip- let the kids know that you have to text the tooth fairy so she knows to come and get the tooth. That way, if you forget, you can say that you forgot to text her. It also circumvents tricky kids who lose a tooth and don't tell anyone so they can see if the tooth fairy is real or not.

We do the gold dollars also! (Well, US ones.)
$1 for most teeth and we did give $2 for the first one. I always keep one or two on hand just in case. Some banks have them but not all - I discovered our local water machine (like where you can fill up empty gallons) gives them for change so I can buy 25c of water and get a bunch.

@catgirl: Hasn’t happened just yet but I imagine I’ll bring a small toy instead of money. My four year old doesn’t know or care about money. The toy will be in the $3-5 range.

@meganmp: great idea! I made a bag to hang on her doorknob and told her the tooth fairy will only leave her something if the tooth is in the bag. I plan on holding on to the bag and she'll have to ask for it whenever she loses a tooth.
@wrkbrk: I thought about doing a little toy but she is obsessed with her piggy bank and dividing money in to the three sections!

I got enough silver dollars and $2 bills for all of his baby teeth. Sometimes he will get a $2 bill and others he will get two silver coins. I got everything from the bank in one visit because I am a severe over-planner.

@catgirl: That definitely happened to us one time! We just gave $20 and then changed it out later but ours isn't super up on her funds. If we were better at teaching it and our kid was doing what yours is I might take the opportunity to give the $20 and teach a lesson about windfalls!

@catgirl: we got caught off guard with our first lost tooth, only had a $10 so that's what he got! OOPS... we said you get more for the FIRST tooth, so hopefully we can get away with that for the next ones.

DS1 has only lost 2 teeth—we gave a $2 bill for the first and a $1 for the second. We spray them with sparkley hairspray for a little more wow factor

Love hearing all the different answers! Thanks! We decided to do $4 - mainly because it will be the easiest option with how we sort money for her piggy bank.

@gotkimchi: her piggy bank has three sections - spend, save, and share. Whenever she gets money we divide it by four. She has to put one fourth in each section and then she can pick where to put the final fourth. At the end of the year we will match her save and share amounts - save will go in her regular savings account and she will get to pick which charities or programs to give her share amount to.
If she is given an amount that is hard to divide, we just do our best. But anytime I am in control of the incoming money I like to make it as easy as possible.

We only had a 10$ bill when she lost her first tooth. We called it the “first tooth bonus”. We have given 5$ for the rest of the teeth. I wish we had started off lower!

We do $2 plus a foreign coin. So far the tooth fairy has brought her coins from England, Cuba, Egypt, Qatar, France, Spain and Japan.
