We didn't know which would be better so ran it both ways on turbo tax and picked the one with the better return. I think you have to file married for the year you get married but can do it separately or jointly. We did "married filing jointly".

The first year we were married we did our taxes out both ways just to see and the "married filing jointly" status got us WAY more back.

You'll be filing as Married, but it's up to you whether to file Jointly or Separately -- which way will get you the most back depends on a variety of factors... filing Jointly doesn't always get you the most (although I think it does most often?).

We file Married/Separately.

@alie: this is what I meant to say!!! You file as married but either jointly or separately. We filed separately the first year and jointly the second year.

@Jennimac: Oh you know what I think we meant the same thing. i was just saying that I didn't think she could file "Single" She would either have to file "Married filing Jointly" or "Married filing Seperately"

@ms.janedoe: Turbo Tax is great even for doing taxes together. I think what I did was do everything as MFJ because that is what works best for MOST people. Then once you get everything entered you can play with turbo tax and change it to MFS and see what it would come up with. If you both make roughly the same amount it is best to do MFJ.
