If you have a cross body bag that you like but doesn't have compartments inside, what about getting a bag organizer? I have one and it has exploded my possibilities with bags!

@Sparkler: um that tote is flippin' cuuuute! Ah, I want to get rid of my JJ Cole bag and get that now....but does it make sense to get a new diaper bag when LO is one already?

I recently found a Boken Every Day Diaper Bag on a deal site for $35 and was a bit weary about it but I love it! It's super lightweight, can be packed in its own bag, and has enough pockets to hold all the things I need for my two boys when we go out for meals. You can wear it as a backpack, cross body, and shoulder. Highly recommend if you don't mind that it doesn't hold it's shape b/c of the lightweight material. Here it is on Amazon:

I think it's great for trips which is one of the reasons why I bought it.

@MerryC: I was also going to suggest a timi and leslie. Most of their bags are $160, but they often have sales.

Skip Hop Duo? Not too pricey or bulky for traveling and they have some upgraded ones that look a little more expensive, like this one. Of course, after I bought this, I snagged someone's barely used Orla Kiely secondhand that I'm using now, but I have always loved the Duo!

@locavore_mama: I'd say it's big enough as long as you aren't an overpacker. It was ok for me the brief time I used it for both but I don't bring much for my toddler anymore -- mainly just a couple of dipes and a snack and small odds and ends.

I like it because it's a tote that converts to a backpack. We have a Danzo messenger bag and hated it - we found it huge and unwieldy, and the magnetic snap never stayed closed.

I have the Fossil Explorer tote (though mine's in grape) and I love it. It comes it lots of colors.

@ ginabean3: I am not a good influence to answer that type of question! My current diaper bag is a speedy with shoulder strap...I told my husband I can use it to hold my daughter's diapers AND hand it down to her to use one day too

@hilsy85: I just use the same strap for when I carry it over the shoulder.
