I have been inspired by the recent board about toys for 2.5 year olds. I am going to try to put some toys away and start rotating them. I have a few questions on how to do this for those of you who already are. 1. What do you do when LO asks for a toy that you've put away? Do you go get it for them? 2. How often do you rotate?

We rotate, but we're pretty lazy about it. Every few weeks I feel like our playroom has gotten stuffed with toys, so I go through and pull out things DS hasn't been playing with and take them out. I put them in an extra bedroom and then I grab a few things I think he might be interested in.
A lot of people are more methodical and they categorize every toy and rotate in and out only certain types all at once. So maybe all the puzzles are in the rotation, but all the legos are out. That way the LOs are more interested in that type of toy after it's disappeared for a while.

We keep a few bins of toys under her bed. She has a small bookshelf were I will set out a few toys.
If she really wants a toy (she often asks for her Dr. kit) I sometimes will say, "Oh I dont know where it is". If she really protests I will say ok, sit here and Mom will go look for it. I will sneak into her room and get it from the box under her bed.
Now at age 4 she does obviously know thats where her toys are. But out of sight out of mind for the most part.

i have no system. randomly, i will put toys away in a closet that he hasn't shown interest in. and then weeks or months later when i am cleaning or going through the closet i will discover it and put it out and he is all into it again. we recently moved and everything got lumped together and all his "old" toys got unpacked and he went nuts over them for about a week.

DS doesn't realize what toy is missing unless he plays with it frequently. Those toys I leave out. Otherwise, when I feel like he's bored with his current toys or we're upstairs and I remember we have such and such, I'll grab it.

@TiredmommaMD: We rotate toys every week or two. I do it after she goes to bed. Usually whenever the toys are threatening to overwhelm our house or she seems bored.
I do get things out if she asks about them. She hardly ever does, but she's only 23 months so that could all change soon. And the "toy jail" is in a closet in the basement she isn't allowed to open, so she doesn't see them.
The things that she loves and plays with all the time, I don't ever put away - her play kitchen, musical instruments, doll cradle, coloring books and crayons. And we leave all her books out on various shelves around the house.

Basically, we have no schedule. I just wait and see what's she's no longer into. The tell tale sign is her leaving things around and making a mess. I like to rotate with themes in mind, such as imaginative play, puzzles, group activities (trains and games), hand-eye coordination toys like tools. It's usually every 2 weeks or so, but really it's whenever she starts making a mess and not caring where she leaves her stuff.She never asks for anything except for craft supplies (like beads and Play-Doh), but those things I put away anyway. The only thing she's ever really asked for is her little animal figures. I usually say I don't know where it is and if she's insistent and looks for it herself, I'll suddenly "find" it. It doesn't happen often. In fact, I just hid her little animals and she hasn't asked for them yet.

I should add that I'm sneaky about my rotations. I never mention that things will be put away. She just wakes up and poof, it's gone
I really love seeing her playing with toys she's rediscovered (either back from hiding or toys she ignored prior to a rotation). It's like they're new toys!

I have not been good at rotating lately but am trying to get back into it. When I was doing it I would also put them back in different areas if possible (ie some things that used to be in the playroom in the living room cabinet or his closet...not big stuff but things like puzzles, etc).

Reviving this thread, now that my home is overwhelmed by Christmas gifts.
I have no idea how to go about rotating toys. DS has so. much. stuff. And I feel like he has favorites.
Maybe I should just start with removing all the toys he doesn't play with daily?
