Looking at getting our DS a train set for Christmas. What's better, the plastic geotracks (sp?) type or the wooden sets? He'll only be 15 months at Christmas but I want some toys for the next stages?

My brother got his son a wood train set. I'm not sure which is better, though. He seems to like it pretty well. It's one of those nice old fashioned types. I think that's they type I would prefer, thinking it would hold up better?

We have a Kid Kraft wooden set and my 3 y.o. loves it. I recommend a wood set but be careful of the small parts. Most large ones like ours have small parts like little gates and people. I stored those away until my son was closer to 3 per the recommended age. I gave it to him around 20 months for Christmas.
We were gifted a plastic little tikes one that's actually really fun too. It just wasn't a table kind so it's on the floor sort of in the way. No small parts to this one.

@ERWOO - question, are the Kid Kraft wooden tracks universal? Meaning, can you put Thomas trains on them or Melissa & Doug ones, etc? Good call on the small parts.
I've read that the GeoTrax sets stay together better but I prefer the classic look of the wooden tracks/trains...but I'm not the one playing with them.

If you want something that could grow with him and he could get alot of play with I'd say Geotrax for sure!
DS LOVED them! Starting getting them when he was 2 and asked for them every birthday and Christmas until he was 6! It was so great to be able to just get filler sets & new buildings to add to his collection. He'd fill the whole living room with some awesome set-ups, even at toddler/pre-school age!
We just recently gave them all to some friends that just had a baby boy!

@Runsyellowlites: Do Geotrax have a lot of little pieces? Do the tracks stay together good?

We started off with a wooden set from Ikea. It is affordable and can be used with Thomas trains. My LO is 18 months old and enjoys destroying the tracks more than playing with the trains.

We were at the store yesterday and DH was totally eyeing all the cars. I think it'll be part of DD's Christmas gifts this year!

@theknest: They do come with little trees, rr signs, a train engineer, etc, but they aren't too tiny & you could always just keep them put up till lo is older. They stay together great & are really durable! They're literally the only toy we've ever been able to pass on bc all of his others have practically been destroyed. Lol
ETA: I was even really sad that he quite playing with them bc they made a batman geotrax series! We're total comic nerds so I really wanted to play with them. Lol

@runsyellowlites: LOL! I hear you...I am the same way with Star Wars stuff!

@theknest: YES! Oh, I don't know if it's compatible with Thomas train stuff, but I think Thomas is creepy so we didn't have any Thomas toys or watch Thomas... AT ALL! lol

I highly recommend the wooden train sets. We have some plastic ones as well, and both DS1and DS2 tend to throw the tracks, which obviously causes them to break and send little plastic pieces flying. The wooden tracks are much more durable, and although they cost a small fortune, seem to have a much longer lifetime.
