We put a latch on E's door. It gets unlatched when the light is green. So she can't come out before, and knows this, and gets bored, so she starts playing with books and puzzles.

E was waking up early and coming into our bedroom, and I realized that she could wake up, roam the house, and hurt herself (or climb into T's crib and smother him) and I would have NO clue, so it was best to lock her in.

Ours worked well for a while and then when LO started doing this we used a sticker chart to reinforce the goal of staying in her room...I think we took her out for ice cream as the reward? It still works pretty well at 3 1/2 but she is pretty compliant. I think the success of the toddler clocks sort of depends on personality.

@Munchkin: well...she did cry/scream for a couple days. But then she'd give up and go play. And after a few days, she figured out that when the song came on, I would come in and see her (and i made a bigggg fuss about it). I think it takes more like a week for the concept to be understood, not just a day or two. We set it for 6:45 during the week and 7:15 on weekends. She definitely struggles more on the weekends (by 7:00 she's whining a little). She wakes up anywhere from 6-6:30 typically. I definitely agree that you want to set it for a reasonable time for your LO, then work on bumping it back 5 minutes here and there.
