Anyone have experience with this and have a preferred way to do it?
We are going to be moving our savings in Canadian dollars to England. Not so great exchange rate right now.

Check to see if your Canadian bank has a sister bank in England. You may be able to get reduced fees or other benefits.

Is it possible to keep it in your account until there is a better rate?

We used HiFX - they give you the best exchange rate and either no fees or very low fees (can't remember exactly). We have moved our money around the world a number of times between Australia, the UK, and the US, and are only annoyed we didn't use HiFX from the start as we would have saved an additional several thousand in exchange rates/bank fees.

I would see if you can find a bank that can deal in multiple currencies. This way you can just wire over CAD and keep it in CAD.
Another option might be a brokerage firm, instead of a bank.

@regberadaisy: well, most of it, yes. But it's whether or not there would be a better rate within a few years or not. I'm so mad at myself, a few years ago the rate was wonderful, we should SO have sent some back at that point. We have a bit of time because DH will need to find a job in England, then he would need six months of pay stubs before we could get a mortgage, then find a house... So we don't need it immediately.
@lamariniere: good idea!

I also used something like HiFx. I can't remember the name of the company right now, but my friend worked there and gave me the idea. I got the best rates when we moved and converted all our GBP to USD.

Keep in mind that with larger amounts, you can sometimes negotiate a slightly better rate with currency conversion companies. I would call the company and see if they can quote you a better rate than what they post online.
