Does your lo have a tricycle? Do they have one of the transitional ones? Which one do you have and do you like it?

We have a radio flyer trike (metal one) which is very sturdy but heavy and harder to get going. We also have a big wheel style but its harder to reach the pedals. Not sure if those are the transitional ones you are talking about. We also looked at some of the smaller radio flyer trikes but DD would lose her balance easily when turning corners due to how light weight it was. We may skip trikes altogether with DS and go straight to balance bike..

@T-Mom: I'm so confused; how do balance bikes work in theory?

We got this one for E for his first birthday. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009QOKMS6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1370003622&sr=8-1&pi=SL75
We're still at the stage where it's just a glorified stroller, but E LOVES it and gets so excited whenever we bring it out. It assembled really easy and so far we like it.

@regberadaisy: a balance bike is just a bike without pedals.. They tend to be low to the ground and the kids learn to scoot them around and its great for getting comfortable with balance. The one we have, the strider can be used pretty much as soon as the child can walk, but the box says 18 months. The thought is that you just avoid training wheels, since training wheels don't teach you true balance, since you have the crutch of the training wheels, which makes it harder to learn how to learn to ride in the long run. I think trikes are great though... It's really fun for the LOs.. We just have the balance bike now too, so I'm thinking of trying how DS does on it before going to trike.
