We supervised our cat at first, just to make sure we knew where he was going and that he stayed close to the house, while he familiarized himself. We started with 30 mins and increased it slowly.

Definitely make sure all shots/ vaccinations, etc. are current(!) - and make sure they give the full array of same (some clinics may not do all shots for indoor cats). Also, make sure to start pest/flea control prior to outdoor exposure (if not already doing same).
