I'm travelling to China and needed to fill out a Visa application. They ask for a list of my family members and their occupations... is there a reason for this?

I filled out an app for a Chinese visa last November and I don't remember that question specifically....but I remember that there were some odd questions, maybe that was one I imagine its for security purposes (they want to know about your family because even if he's not going with you, it could still have an impact. What if he's CIA?

DH and I traveled to China as tourists at the end of 2011 and I'm a journalist. I had to complete an additional affadavit saying that I would not do any reporting while in China. I'm not sure which other occupations would require this extra rigamarole.

I went in 2009. While I don't remember them asking about other family member's occupations, they definitely asked about mine. I was working for a foreign embassy at the time and like @MsInformation: I had to get a special note from my work stating that I was only going for tourism purposes.
Their country, their entry rules.

I mean the family members listed are not going to China with me... so what's the point in knowing their occupation?
And it's not a big deal for me ti disclose this information, but I'd like to know why before I give out personal information. =/
Just annoying that no one has the answers. They just told me to call the Chinese Embassay. Great.

@stiletto_mom: From what I found via Google, it seems like there's an issue with journalists and photographers visiting the country. IMO, listing someone's occupation isn't really personal information. If you want to visit another country, you're subject to their rules and requirements, regardless of how reasonable or unreasonable they seem.
