Tubes Tied?

I'm about 90% certain I'll be scheduling a c-section at the end of this pregnancy. I'm also 100% certain that this will be my LAST pregnancy. I just don't like being pregnant. We're planning on adopting any future babies after this, if we want more.

So, I'm debating getting my tubes tied during my c-section. If not, I'll get a Mirena for sure.

I'm not worried about the permanency, but any side effects that could come from it. Of course, I'll be Googling, but I was wondering if any of you have gone through it and can give me some experience?

This is what DH wants me to do, but I don't want to! For me it is too permanent, and I'm only 30. I would rather get the Mirena.

My MIL had a post tubes-tied surprise baby (at 39, got them tied at 29), hence SIL is 16 years younger than my DH ... That's my main reason to go with Mirena instead, I don't trust it!

@beaker: I've heard of this happening! Were there risks along with that? (I know Google can tell me that, but first hand experience is worth a lot more to me.)

My former coworker has her tubes tied at the time of her second c-section an never complained about any issues. She was back at work 6 weeks after delivery and was 100%!

I know someone who had a baby after having her tubes tied...it's major surgery and I wouldn't do it- I'm pushing for DH to get the quick, reversible snip.

@Dandelion: I want to do the same. I like the idea of an IUD, but I'm 100% sure that I don't want another after our 2nd. I hope you get some more responses, because I'm really curious of people's experiences with this.

There are far fewer complications with a tubal (if done during a c-section) then with an IUD. Tubal ligation is also extremely effective as BC, there will always be cases where BC fails, unless your BC of choice is 100% abstinence.

Ill be getting it done if we have another child, since ill be scheduling a c-section. I like the fact that its permanent. My mom had hers done during my twin brothers c-section and she's never had any issues with it.

ETA: I tried getting Mirena and they couldn't get it placed. I have no plans to ever try that again...it was terrible.

If there ever comes a time when we do NOT want any more kids....I think DH will get a vasectomy instead.

You might consider doing both... tubes tied and a vasectomy?

@mrbee: I knew a family that did that and ended up with a surprise baby. Reminded me of the Jurrasic Park line "nature finds a way"!

I think either Mirena or tubal would be fine. If nature is getting through one of those, I figure it's meant to be!

I wouldn't ever get my tubes tied, unless perhaps during a c-section. I wouldn't ever opt in to major surgery I don't have to do.

My mum had her tubes tied and it was fine. She had around a week of recovery time and no complications at all.

@Danizaur: Same here. We've already had the discussion, and DH is willing to get a vasectomy.

I haven't had one but my mom did, after he c-section with my little sister. No problems.

I have the Mirena, but I WISH I could get my tubes tied. My LO will be the only one, so no going back inside.

After our second in the future, I may do a procedure where they block your tubes. My brother recently got the snip.

@pui: I'm only considering because I'll already be having the c-section...I wouldn't opt to do the surgery without them already needing to be in there.

@cascademom: I read about that, too. That could be another possibility.

@erinpye: A vasectomy isn't *that* reversible. The odds of pregnancy go down pretty significantly the further out you are. (I know there are all those billboards, but they are making money on hope. Awful thing.)

My sister had hers clipped at her last c-section. Apparently, she could have the clips removed in the future if she wanted. No complications, healing issues or side effects.

@Espion: I get that, but as I'm not electing a c-section, in my mind it makes more sense for my husband to have a quick, minimally invasive procedure vs. me having a major surgery. Especially since I'm the one pushing out the babies!

@erinpye: Heh, I totally understand! You're in the know, then. FWIW, my sister would never have done it outside of a c-section either. The fewer times inside my belly, the better.
I just couldn't resist the mini-PSA (although, the ladies on here are intellectual enough to not need it). I know too many people who thought that it's a simple clip and 100% reversible. Those little tubes usually get the full torture treatment: cut, burned, clipped and tied!

I guess I won't post my Mirena story here, lol.

I will likely go back on depo long-term when done babies. Anyone I know however that had the ligation had no issues or complications and were happy to have it done.

@erinpye: @Espion: That's why I'm considering it...If I'm getting a c-section anyways, might as well get it done while they're in there, especially since my insurance will pay for it 100%. That way DH doesn't have to go in for a procedure. I do wonder how much longer it makes the c-section process, though. I know I'm gonna be impatient to hold my baby, lol.

@Dandelion: it shouldn't be that long. Maybe 10 more minutes at most. You can ask the OB exactly what they do (clip with plastic clips, cut and tie, etc.)

Everyone thought that I would get my tubes tied after my last pregnancy(scheduled csection) but I really didn't want too. I had heard from people that having both at the same time was way worse recovery wise than just a csection. But then I was told that my hospital may not even do tubal ligations because it's a Catholic hospital(not 100% sure of this, just what I heard, but it makes sense if they wouldn't), so I would have been opened up a 2nd(3rd?) time. I went for a Mirena, and DH is getting the old snip

I had a c/s with my 1st and 2nd - I chose to have my tubes cut and tied after my 2nd - it added 5 mins to the c/s - super quick!

I healed way faster after my 2nd than my 1st so I am not sure why people say recovery is harder after a c/s & tubal.
