What is the turnover like at your dacycare? One of the reasons I am moving my LO to a new daycare is that they have such high turnover where she is now. I keep seeing new faces every week! It makes it all the more frustrating to have to keep adjusting to new people and have to aways "teach" them all the specific things about my LO.
I am going to see a new daycare today. Do you think its rude to ask them abou turnover?

We are at a center and I think this is one of my #1 frustrations. Its not even turnover, its that they move teachers around so much!
I think the infant room has had like 5 teachers and all new support since we started a year ago.

There hasn't been much turnover for the infant room. All of the teachers are the same as when we started daycare in April. One teacher will be leaving soon for maternity leave.

It should definitely be a question you ask. If they aren't investing/engaging their employees, why should their employees invest/engage your child?

@Thehistoryofus: Yes in the beginning it was the same way, they kept moving the teachers to differen classes and then changing what shifts they worked. So there wasnt consistency and it made it harder for them to remember the different need of each child at certain times of the day

@pelikila: Thats exactly what my husband said. He thinks this is the main reason we are having problems because some of the "teachers" are just so nonchalant about everything and dont follow our intructions, probably because they are planning to quit any minute

That would be really frustrating to me. I think it's a totally legitimate question to ask a daycare provider.

I agree, turnover does seem to factor into the level of care. The more "invested" teachers seem to be much more engaged in the child and familiar with routines and special wishes.

I would definitely ask about turnover! I work at a daycare where our average turnover is over 10 years. There are many of my coworkers who have been there 15, 20, or 25 years! It definitely makes a difference just with how invested they are and experience. If you are constantly getting new staff not only do they have to learn about each child but the administration has to constantly be training new staff in best practice, daycare policies and curriculum, etc. Good luck finding a new daycare that you love!

I definitely think you should be asking about turnover! That was one reason we liked our daycare when we toured, the lead teacher in the little infant room has been there 13 years, and in the older infant room, 11 years.

it is definitely an important question to ask. there has been no turnover in our daycare which is one of the main reasons we love it so much. charlie adores his teachers.
