I like a white kitchen with a black island. Although you need something else in the general area that is black to tie it in.

I'm not a huge fan of the look with mid-tone wood on the bottom. I think it would be hard to match/coordinate floors, mid-tone wood cabinets and furniture, especially if it's wood furniture.

I think the two-tone look will only work with two colors that complement each other well. Like white and black (@Myicitygirl: that looks great!), or white and gray. Or something like these pics, if you want to try bolder colors than usual.

The medium-tone brown is so common, it would just get missed, or it would look like you only updated part of the kitchen.

I do really like the look and I wanted to do it in my kitchen. So I did, but now I'm painting the lower cabinets to match my uppers because of resale value. It's hard to move a house with the two-tone look because it's not popular, and with the mid-tone wood and it matching the floors, it does kind of look like you forgot to finish painting. That's how it looked to me after living with it for a few weeks.

I like two tone but I think it works much better with a darker toned wood/color on the bottom. The yellow light/medium wood tone of the first few doesn’t look “complete”

I like a contrasting color on the island, but I prefer all the wall cabinets (upper and lower) to be the same. I just think it looks more cohesive.

I think two tone cabinets are quite trendy and sort of losing popularity now. If you want to do two colours, I would do the Island a different colour than the rest of the kitchen. We did blue cabinets and a White Island and it looked good!
