Well...apparently it was all a hoax. The family is sticking to their story, but nothing matches up. Seems like it was possibly a ploy to get donations. Not cool.

Oh my goodness, that is so wrong. The article mentioned that people have raised $135,000 for the family, ON TOP of KFC still willing to honor their $30,000 promise towards medical bills.
Stories like this just make it that much harder to believe anything you read on the internet. So sad

I just read an article in Time magazine this morning about the pros and cons of crowd funding. One of the major cons is that you can never be sure if you're going to get swindled. Holds true, I suppose.

Yep. I am SO not surprised. That family seemed like big winners from the get-go. This is why I'm skeptical and only donate to charities that I know where the money is going. Scammers like this are everywhere. I just feel so bad for that little girl. First she had her face mauled and now she has to deal with this. While she doesn't get it now, she will know what happened in the future when she googles her name.

I'm not surprised this was faked. There was nothing grotesque about that little girl's face. People like her parents make it so hard for others really in need of support.

When I told my husband this story, his reaction was "Are you sure it's not a scam?"
Doesn't really surprise me... :\
And yep, this is why I don't just donate to random causes.

Ugh, this is awful. My heart still goes out to that poor little girl. She didn't ask for any of this and someday she will likely find out her family used the horrifying attack on her face to try to scam people. How does someone deal with that? A plastic surgeon offered to help her for free, and I honestly hope he still does. Her family may be awful, but she deserves the help.

Ugh... I felt like a big meany last week when I said to my DH that I thought it was a scam. Now, I see that my cynical self was right.
I mean, I hope the little girl gets her surgery but I also kind of want to see the grandma be charged with fraud? KFC could probably sue grandma for slander/libel too since it dragged their name through the mud for a few days.

You know,the whole story sounded fishy to me. I swear I saw a pic where the eye patch was on the right side and then another pic where it was on the left and that's when I started to get skeptical.

@singingbee: She lost her eye, so I don't know how they could have been switching the eye patch around! Maybe the image was just flipped or something.
Either way, if the KFC thing is a hoax, the family is pathetic and that girl is going to have some serious emotional scars.

I didn't want to say this before but before my mom retired to take care of LO, she was a KFC manager.
She would tell me crazy stories about people trying to scam KFC because KFC still has some policies in place that favor the customer where a lot of other fast food restaurants have taken them out due to the major scamming of dishonest people.
She also tells me good stories of people also. 
Her bad stories though... were really bad.
