We need a new bed frame, and I love a couple that I found that are upholstered in light grey velvet, they look really comfortable compared to getting another wooden frame. Just not sure how badly little kids trash furniture when they get older and need expertise from you experienced mamas out there. Do you think this will get beat to shit, colored on with markers, doused in grape juice, etc? Or is it possible to control them more than I think?

At 5, we don't let our daughter have crayons or juice in her room. She knows to not color on furniture. and she can have water in her room. But she has a wood frame.

It's gorgeous(!), and it is definitely easier to control things more than you think. Heck, I am far more likely to spill in my own bed than my preschooler!

I want an upholstered headboard so bad! But I'm more worried about DH's greasy sweaty head leaving marks than DS (2.5). Anyone have any experience with that? DH's pillow gets seriously gross.

Love your bed! We have a no food or drink policy in the bedrooms, so I'm hoping our linen upholstered bed will last.

@BadgerMom: DH also has a greasy/sweaty head (we basically only use white pillowcases for him) and we've had no problems with our navy upholstered bed so far, about 1.5 years in. his head doesn't really seem to come into contact with the headboard that much, haha!

Well, the only big thing my son ever did was to puke milk on my brand new couch....cost me $300 to replace the cushion cover.
My son is pretty neat, though, he doesn't make a mess and he's not allowed to have food or markers in bed, mine or his, lol.

We just have an upholstered headboard. It's light colored and kind of burlap. I'm not sure I would do a full bed- more for general wear and tear- out bedroom is a no play area.

We have an upholstered headboard in a light color, we've had it for 5 years and it still looks great - though we don't eat/drink/do art in bed 
We also have a daybed in a slightly darker grey velvety fabric that gets tons of use by our toddler and two dogs it is holding up really well. We did have it professionally cleaned after a few years.

We have a light beige upholstered king bed (headboard/frame) for 3+ years and DD1 is 2 and it's been fine! And we co-slept with her for 2 years too!

We have had one since before LO. No issues but she doesn't come in our bed with food/toys, really in our bed period.

For you, or for kids? I wouldn't buy something like this for my kids, but I would for myself. If my kids ever colored on my personal furniture with markers, I would go ballistic. Same with grape juice, for god's sake. But something in their room? I wouldn't even try to keep something like this nice.
But I have cats, so I've learnt my lesson about nice soft furniture. Someday when they all die.

All my son is allowed to do in our room is sit and watch TV. He doesn't play or eat or drink (and if he is I'm sitting with him).
I would not be worried about that at all!
I really think you can control how kids use/respect the furniture. Sure there may be the occasional mishap. But for the most part they only do what we let them do (at least that's my experience).

My BIL has a white couch and he's got four kids! So far the only accidents have been adults with coffee! I'd go for it!

We've had our Collette bed from Crate & Barrel for over a year and it looks good as new. Our son sometimes sleeps in our bed but otherwise doesn't spend any time in our room which helps. We don't eat or drink in our room either. Also, when I sit in bed and read or watch TV my head is propped up on a pillow so there are so stains from our heads.
It definitely depends on your lifestyle but I think it can totally work.

@BadgerMom: we had this issue. Dh would lean his head against the headboard to read and it left a yellowing mark from hair oils and rubbing. So if you make sure to keep a pillow between head and headboard at all times I think it's fine.

We've had a very similar bed for about 6 years now and it's survived my husband's sweaty head and our two toddlers nicely! That being said, we don't eat in bed nor do the kids bring art supplies in our room.

We have an upholstered bed and two small boys who jump all over it and it's fine. Tougher fabric though -- I probably wouldn't do velvet (but I don't like the way it feels, either).

I really want the second one pictured, but @youboots: @birdofafeather: I think you have a great point that the sides and corners will wear much faster than just a headboard. no pets right now, and we will never have cats (allergies), but are getting another puppy this year and ideally I'd love two dogs some day. sooooo yeah, I can see dogs rubbing up against the corners and getting dirt and dog hair everywhere.

we're tidy and definitely do not eat/drink or do crafts in our bedroom, and I intend to always keep it that way, but right now we're in a 650 sq foot apartment and our room is 1/3 of the entire house, so making it an off-limits no play zone (which sounds heavenly ) is just not realistic.

I recently bought an upholstered headboard and avoided velvet not because of kids destroying it, but because I thought that every bit of lint, fuzz, hair, etc. would be attracted to the fabric. We are clean and tidy, but no way am I willing to lint rolll the headboard on a regular basis. I also thought that the nap of the fabric would be easy to crush with even the slightest cleaning, so one stain from hand cream, a sick kid, etc., and it'd be spoiled. I went with canvas instead.

We have a light colored upholstered headboard, but it's leather. It's several years old and still looks brand new.
I will say, we've wiped it down several times. It does get dingy from DH's head leaning up against it, but then again, we do watch TV in bed.

We have a navy linen upholstered headboard (got it 1.5 years ago) and have a 4 year old and no issues. It's still in great shape and I don't think DS ever touches is. We also got a light gray upholstered headboard for DS's room in August (though the edges are framed with white wood) and my husband recently noticed DS has been wiping his boogers on it (ew!!!!) but it was washed up well.

@LCTBQE: Ya know what I did that has helped so much with the cat scratching? I pressed packing tape along the sides of any upholstery I thought they'd claw at. it worked great til my baby ripped them off (he loves sticky shit) and they scratched them up!!

We have a light grey upholstered bed with two kids and a dog. The kids play in our room all the time and we've never had an issue with the bed getting damaged. I'm not even sure what people are saying would happen to it? My kids aren't painting in my bed or eating spaghetti in there, so there's nothing particularly messy happening.

@LCTBQE: our dog sleeps on our bed and has not messed it up whatsoever. We do have a navy linen and not velvet but I wouldn't stress! See below for photographic evidence
