So our vacuum just died. It was a cheap dirt devil but lasted five years!
I'm looking for something around that $100 mark preferably, but might consider going up to $200 for a higher-quality one. Any recommendations?

not exactly a recommendation so much as a 'this is what works for us", but we have a small apartment and use a regular shop vac (about 50$ at Costco) -- it's bulky, but we keep it in a shed and only DH vacuums (woohoo!). it's super strong, which is the best part, and should last a long time. for daily crumbs I have a cheap stick vacuum that works ok!

@tysonja: well bulky doesn't work too well - it will have to fit in a small closet! Costco is a good place to look though - thanks!

I LOVE our shark! I don't remember if it's the professional or the navigator. It's amazing!

@hilsy85: good to hear! I'm looking at this one: http://www.costco.com/Shark-Rotator

The one that's $60 cheaper has poor reviews...

I have a dyson- while I like how small it is, and lightweight- there are a few things I dislike about it. The length of the cord is way short- I cant do a whole room without having to unplug and move to a different outlet. Also it tends to get clogged like once a year (badly enough that I cant remove it!!)- so I have to have it serviced for $30.00. It has lasted 5 years (so far)- but at this rate servicing it I could almost buy a new one!

We have a Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro, and it works great. We have a very fluffy cat that sheds a lot, and it has no problem picking up the fur. We have had it for almost 3 years.
It has great reviews on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Navigator-Lift-Away-Professional-NV356E/dp/B005KMDV9A

We also have a shark--can't remember the model but it's gray and purple and works great! DH got it on the amazon Black Friday lighting sales for under $100.

Has anyone ever heard of a Miele? My husband insists that we get one, but at $600, that's a tough pill to swallow. I might have the look into the ones suggested above..

@NorthStar: I just got one! I love it! I got the Titan. Which one are you looking at?
For a cheaper one, our Bissell lasted for years but I *hate* changing the dust basket. I always manage to breathe it in, even though I'm really careful and I hold my breath!

@sunny: I'm not sure which specific one, but when he told me the price, I about dropped my coffee cup! lol granted, he has allergies and although our house has wood floors, we will be getting carpet in the basement. so, we do need a really good one..

@NorthStar: Yes! There's a pretty famous redditor who is all about vacuums, and he says that Mieles are the best.
I would go with a bagged vacuum vs. a canister-- they have better suction and do a better job.

I never thought I was interested in vacuums until I got sucked in to his AMAs. I think I read every single question and comment.
