We are doing this now with my 3 year old. His issue is actually sensory modulation, which basically is regulating between super active and out of control and then super focused. There is also some proprioceptive/vestibular stuff going on.

We are going to an OT with a sensory gym and it is really fun! Huge pillows everywhere, an indoor swing and slide. Scooters, trampolines. He really loves going!

Heavy work is something they have recommended for at home. I actually wrote a post about heavy work last year, and a quick google search might find some more activities that your little guy might enjoy! The heavy work makes a huge difference for my lo.

Not with my kid, but I've got a common genetic condition that makes me prone to poor proprioception. It's why I'm flexible and so clumsy. So if this had been around when I was younger, I would have probably qualified. As it was, my pediatrician told my mom to start me in dance classes, which she did, and which actually teaches many of the same skills.

@mamimami: does he avoid specific activities where he might feel out of control? Like jumping on a trampoline or swinging? My son is incredibly physical and active, but she said that he might have something going on because he avoids things like that.

We just "graduated" out of OT for similar things. My son is 3.5.

He was slightly behind with fine motor and has sensory issues. He LOVED OT....like really loved it. Heavy play is something they stressed as really important for him. Before we started, he was terrified of swings (and now has no problem with them). His fine motor has greatly improved too.

He didn't really have an official diagnosis, but I will say, I think OT is great...for anyone really. It can't hurt!
