Veterans Day Potty Training

I feel like today was a bust. He made it to the potty this morning, but then just had accidents the rest of the day (and pooped again in his nap diaper). I don't feel like we made any progress... Hopefully he does okay at daycare, but I'm not hopeful.

@Adira: Will they keep him in underwear at daycare?

  3. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: Yep, as long and he has spare clothes to change into in case of accidents, they'll keep him out of diapers. So hopefully that will help!

@Adira: That's good. Hopefully he does good this week. It will be nice to not have to change diapers!

@Adira: Hopefully, daycare can make a change. I'm hoping it helps for us as well.

Yesterday was a bust for us as well. We made it to the bathroom for each time, but he couldn't manage to release. We finally let him off the toilet, and within a few minutes came the accident.

For poop, he never let us know and just decided to go in his underwear. DS doesn't nap, so we didn't have to worry about the nap diaper.

@Mrs. Toad: I'm really hoping that Daycare makes a difference. They bring all the kids regularly and hopefully if there are other kids in their class who use the potty, that will help.

@Adira: daycare essentially potty trained both of my kids. I'm a big fan of that process if you have a cooperative daycare. K trained super fast from starting to fully trained (including overnight). C took much longer to get through the whole process.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@MamaG: Nice! Hopefully our daycare does the same!! With Xander, he was really motivated to train himself and we made really good progress over the weekend we trained him. Then he continued to make progress at daycare and was basically trained by the next weekend. I'm HOPING the same will be true with Logan, though I suspect it'll take him longer to be fully trained.

@Adira: Glad that your daycare works with you.

I know mine does. His entire class will move up at the beginning of the year to the next room. The ratio will go up as well, so he has to be potty trained. He is the last one in his class to be wearing diapers, which were taken away last week.

They will take him every half hour or so. I brought six pairs of pants and 15 pairs of underwear. We'll see how many I take home tonight. If I have to do laundry multiple times this week, I will.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Mrs. Toad: Yeah, I sent in 8 extra pairs of pants and undies, plus socks and a spare set of sneakers! But I know he won't need that many because he'll only pee 3-4 times while there, haha. But agreed, if I have to do laundry multiple times this week, so be it!

@Adira: I forgot spare socks and shoes. However, they are planning on pushing liquids on him, so he might need most of those clothes.

  12. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Mrs. Toad: He might not need spare socks/shoes, especially if he's wearing undies which will help contain any accidents. I'm hoping Logan won't need his spares!

@Mrs. Toad: You should try pouring warm water on him while he's on the potty. You know how kids always pee in the bath because of the warm water?

My DS had this same problem. He didn't understand how to "let it go". And someone on the boards at the time said she did this to her daughter so we tried it and it worked really well. We kept a plastic cup in the bathroom and the first several time we had to keep the water running (also helpful) and keep pouring water on him. After a while he finally got it.

@Adira: DS1 essentially self-trained 3 weeks AFTER he turned 3. (He is always the kid that does thing JUST past the "normal" deadline where you start to kinda worry and then he's like *eyeroll mom*).

We had tried a few times before that point and he just like did not get it or care, even though most of his classmates were pottytrained. We had tried the 3 day method or beign pantsless before and it was painful and he became hostile to the potty. So we backed off for like months.

The only thing we did in the weeks leading up to it was put him in undies as soon as we got home from school and on the weekends when we were home. He had accidents at school like 1-2 a day the first week, but after that he was golden.

Oddly, what really cemented potty training for him was when daycare taught him he could pee standing up. It was really fun or something?? He loves peeing standing up (aim issues are obviously something we're working on) but he hasn't had an accident in weeks.

  15. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@gingerbebe: haha, don't you love it when kids like to stress you out for no reason??

I'm terrified of letting my kids stand to pee because my SIL told me horror stories of her son missing for YEARS (and I've been traumatized by having to clean a men's bathroom at a KFC when I was 16).

  16. gingerbebe

    cantaloupe / 6131 posts

@Adira: Its really not that bad - I mean he's 3, he doesn't have that much VOLUME of pee. We go through a lot of Lysol wipes, but whatever. If he misses, he also ends up peeing on himself most of the time and then he thinks he had an accident and gets upset, so he's learning to actually direct the stream better. Better to teach them to aim young, I say! You could also try one of those little kid urinals and see if that helps.

I've been sort of lurking in this thread, since DD magically spontaneously potty trained herself instantly a few weeks ago and has not had a single pee accident since - but, we're having challenges with poop. She is going several days without pooping, meaning she's probably holding it, even though when we talk to her she seems perfectly willing to try (and has successfully pooped on the potty twice). I think she's just getting constipated which makes it difficult for her to poop on the potty, so we've been loading up the fiber in her diet. Any experiences or advice for working through this? I really do not want her to become chronically or dangerously constipated. If she doesn't poop at daycare today I'm going to start giving her pear juice tonight.

@PawPrints: One thing to be careful of is that too much fiber in the absence of water actually makes constipation worse. So keep an eye on hydration in addition to everything else. Blueberries always seem to clear out my boys, so some smoothies might be a good thing to add!

@PawPrints: A couple of things, do you have a small stool that she can prop her feet up on? This way she can bear down on her feet to help get things going.

Additionally, one thing that you can try is to have her sit on the toilet wearing a diaper and let her have the bowel movement that way, so she gets used to the feeling and experience of sitting and expelling.

    Good luck!

@PawPrints: I think apple juice is supposed to help with constipation too. Good luck.

    @snowjewelz: Thanks!!

Daycare was a disaster. He held his pee all day and then peed all over the floor right before I showed up to pick him up!!! Gahhh! Hope tomorrow goes better!

I think we have pee down. On the other hand, he pooped in his underwear and then told me.

@Mrs. Toad: Thanks! Sorry about the poop in underwear!

Logan actually peed in the potty tonight all on his own, so hopefully he'll go at daycare tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Progress!!! He peed twice in the potty at daycare!!! Had an accident as soon as we got home though.

Poor kid pooped on the potty for the first time tonight (yay!!) and was totally traumatized!! Cried during the whole thing and for ten minutrs after!! I suspect he might avoid it for a while now...

@Adira: Yay for pooping on the potty! Hopefully, you don't have a regression with it. Good job daycare.

I'm pretty sure we have pee down. He is refusing to poop and now won't poop in a diaper or his underwear either. I may have to look back at the suggestions to avoid constipation.

@Adira: Pooping is rough! DS is 3 and fully pee trained (day and night) but we haven't touched on pooping in the potty because he's just not ready. What we've had done and works for us is making him request a pull up to doing "yucky". It has saved us from avoiding him taking a dump on the floor, legit less than a foot from the toilet. Boys. lol

Thanks for the constipation suggestions, we are still waging war over here but some progress! DD has pooped in her diaper at night for each of the last three nights, which I'm relieved by since that means things are at least moving, but no daytime pooping means no potty progress. She wakes up every morning talking excitedly about how if she poops on the potty at daycare then we'll take her to the store to pick out a toy (that's the plan), but then nothing happens, so that makes me think it's still just too difficult for her. We've been doing pear juice, raspberries, curried lentils, and last night she pretty much ate an entire mango as her dinner. I think she's likely not drinking enough water at daycare either - she usually only takes a sip of most fluids and that's all she wants, so I'm sure that's a factor.

Somebody on a local group highly recommended this book to get kids to start pooping on the potty, but I can't bring myself to spend $16: https://www.amazon.com/Poopie-Party-Wendy-Crikelair/dp/1462880932

@looch: We use a two-step stool for her to climb up onto the potty, but her legs aren't long enough to rest her feet on it when she's on the potty. Maybe if we tried on her little potty...

Lots of progress today. Daycare caught him pooping and got him to the toilet in time. He didn't cry and they thought it might be the thing that got him over the hump. After dinner, he peed and I gave him the tablet as a reward while he sat on the toilet. Half an hour later, he had pooped as well!!! YAY!!!

  38. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

    @Mrs. Toad: Woohoo!!!

I think Logan's traumatic pooping experience has made him afraid of the potty or something. He refused to even sit on it all day yesterday. He went pee in his nap diaper twice and then when we got home, refused to sit on the potty and immediately peed all over the floor.

@Mrs. Toad: Thanks! I'm reluctant to go backwards, so I'm going to try to keep encouraging him to use the potty... fingers cross it gets better before we have to travel for Thanksgiving next week!
