I gave my LO Tri-vi-sol daily when I was EBF.

Um, some days? I'm so bad about remembering them
When I remember I give him Carlson drops...just a drop on my nipple before he nurses.

i didn't know about vitamin d drops until last week! so i bought them and started giving them to her a few days ago.

Our doc told us to start giving them to her at her 2 week appt. We just bought them at Target.

Never heard of 'em and have therefore never used them!
Can anybody tell me why LO might need them?

We were told Poly-Vi-Sol at her two week appt. We bought the first one at Target. I saw on Amazon there is a subscribe & save so I just placed an order.

I do but often forget, bad mama. I keep them next to my more milk plus bottle and soooo nearly mixed them up the other day!

@Kemma: Most lactating mothers are deficient in vitamin D so their breast milk doesn't contain enough vitamin D for the baby. So the AAP recommends giving babies vitamin D supplements.

Nope! I was surprised bc we live in a Vit D deficient area.

@banana: who knew?! Would being out in the sun do the same job as drops I wonder?
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@Kemma: my dotilted us to start them at her two week appt (she was a nov baby). He said he doesn't prescribe them for babies born in spring and summer because they get enough sun exposure.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
Sometimes. I wasn't diligent since I felt like LO got lots of sun time anyway.
coconut / 8299 posts
@Kemma: Yes, sunlight would do the same thing but the AAP advises that babies under 6 months avoid sun exposure due to an increase in skin cancer. My dermatologist was really adamant about making sure my LO wasn't exposed to too much direct sunlight as an infant. I'm not a doctor so this is just from what I've learned from our pediatrician and dermatologist!

Yep and we only started a few weeks ago. Oops. I give it to him after his bath.

@Kemma: Our pediatrician said that the sunlight in winter is not enough to supply us with the Vitamin D we need. Even during spring/summer months, it would require being outside in light clothing to get all that we need, which isn't recommended for the littles.

yep since week 2. we have the carlson ones from amazon, we do them with bath so more often than not.

Yup we gave DD Carlson Vit D drops daily starting a week after she was born and she still gets them at 1 week shy of 1 year.

We were told from the very beginning to give vitamin D because its the one vitamin that does not come through in breastmilk- my pediatrician's words, not mine.

I fall into the 'when I remember' category. My pedi didn't tell me to use them until 2 month appt., and in all the reading I did, I missed that bit of info. I do feel guilty about that.

I was wondering if it was ok for mom to supplement instead. I take about 2000 IU of D3. Maybe that doesn't work though, based on what @Pink Champagne: said...

My pedi told me to give them to lo but I never did.

@JerricaBenton: vitamin D is not excreted in breastmilk (in adequate amounts) even if the Mum takes supplements. That is why babe needs to be supplemented.
