This may be a stupid question but do you still get vitamin d when it's overcast?
Now that it's not bloody cold I try to get J outside everyday. Is he still getting Some vitamin d?
Also- did you stop vitamin d drops once summer came?

I say yes bc you can get sunburn even when it's cloudy so the rays do pass through the clouds.

@regberadaisy: that's kind of what I was thinking... but I'm unsure whether to continue the drops? I know they say to get enough vitamin d be outside half hour each day... so if it's cloudy would that mean be outside for an hour?

oh, that I don't know. M isn't on Vitamin D drops.

I've read some strange things about vit D, including it doesn't come through clouds, glass, most clothing. It can be washed off?!? I'm just not sure about it all. I take my 3.5 month old out in just a diaper for 5 minutes a day when it's sunny. I would think *some* would come through cloud-cover, but probably not a whole lot.

I do think you get vitamin d on cloudy days but I'm not sure. Our pediatrician said to continue d drops until LO is getting a good amount of solids per day or if you supplement with formula.

"Cloudy days, shade, and having dark-colored skin also cut down on the amount of vitamin D the skin makes."

@JerricaBenton: well J is definitely well-established with foods, he's 15 mos and eats as much as me, and just breastfeeds only twice a day. He started vitamin d drops around fall of last year.
@regberadaisy: oh, your ped didn't have M start them once fall/winter hit?
@allison: huh. that all sounds so weird. definitely need to ask my ped!

@Mrs. Pen: nope, I asked too bc a lot of people here are vit d deficient bc we don't "technically" get a lot of sunny days. But he said we can re-evaluate when she's older. Jotting it down for her 15month well visit!
ETA: and also maybe bc we supplement with formula it was less of a concern?

@Mrs. Pen: interesting! i stopped vitamin d drops at 4.5 months b/c from that point on, T was formula fed and his formula has vitamin D in it. I think since he'll be drinking whole milk (hopefully) he'll get it from that when we switch over? And from being outside too?

I just try to make sure she gets plenty of foods with Vitamin D in them! We go outside every single day after daycare (even if it's just for 10 minutes) so she gets some fresh air (and any Vitamin D she may pick up while we're out). I stopped drops a long time ago when we ran out. Ooops.

@regberadaisy: @winniebee: did either of you have your LO's vit d levels checked at their 9 month? J's was low so that was six-ish months ago? I should ask them to check again when I make his 15 mos.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Mrs. Pen: nope, I was too preoccupied with her low iron levels! haha But I might ask them to at her 15 m.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@regberadaisy: oh! I thought it was standard. the dr just said alright he's 9 months - bloodwork! haha I just said ok. Tested his CBC, platelets, iron etc..

@Mrs. Pen: she did have bloodwork which tested her iron...I'm not sure what else they tested for! I should ask maybe they did test for vitamin d and it wasn't a concern. I think the shockingly low iron levels overtook everything else.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@Mrs. Pen: I don't think so - he had iron and lead paint checked at 9 months. B/c he is 100% formula fed, I don't think it's a concern - my understanding is that if baby is 50% or more breastfed, vitmain D drops are recommended, but I'm not sure until what age.

I decided against drops, and we just try to get outside more. LO is 3.5 months. Should I request blood work at his 4 month appt to check and make sure he's getting enough? I just have an aversion to giving him anything but breastmilk until he's older. But obvs don't want him to be vitamin deficient. (Sorry for the hijack!)

@allison: I'm not planning to do the drops either, but I have your same question ... Is the blood work standard?
