So where do ya'll stand on voting for someone that's not part of one of the two main political parties? I'm torn because on the one hand it seems like a waste of a vote, since it's so much less likely that they'll win. But on the other hand that will never change if people are too scared to vote non-Republican or Democrat. Anyone have any thoughts?

If everyone who wanted to vote for a 3rd party stopped viewing it as a wasted vote, a 3rd party might actually stand a chance of becoming a legitimate contender over time. The two party system has GOT to change. I don't see any other way it will change unless people stop seeing it as a wasted vote!

I generally vote democrat, but there are always a few races that have no democratic candidate and for those, I tend to vote for the green party candidates that are available. I know they aren't likely to win but I still want my voice heard that I DON'T want the other candidates.

I usually vote Democrat across the board but today I early voted and voted for a Green party candidate. I agree with @travellingbee: - I know she isn't likely to win, but my vote counts and I think she's the best choice.

I think you should vote for whomever you believe is the best candidate! That's how I vote. It's not a wasted vote in the least.

I vote 3rd parties all the time! I kind of see it as a wasted vote, but I think it's more important to vote for who I think is the best candidate, no matter.

I am all for it, although I don't usually do it myself. Nothing irks me more than to see people from one of the two major parties telling someone who voted 3rd party that they "wasted" their vote. (Hello, Democrats and Ralph Nader!) If it's who you want, it's not a waste. Grrr.

I'm a registered Democrat but have voted 3rd party for almost 8 years. Thing is that this particular party generally endorses Democratic candidates, at least for the big ticket ballots like President, Governor, and Mayor. I do it because I believe(d) in what the party stood for and we shouldn't be a two-party system!

I will be voting for at least 1 Green party candidate in our local level election next month. I won’t (though, never say never) vote for a 3rd party candidate for a major office because those stakes are too high for me personally, and I want my vote to be the most effective vote for my beliefs across the board. My POV is based from working within our current party system though; I would have a different POV I'm sure if I thought the two-party system will change anytime soon. I don't believe any legit vote is wasted.

Depends on the race. If I like a 3rd party candidate better than the democrat and I think the democrat will probably win anyways, or if the republican candidate really didn't scare me, I'd vote 3rd party. If I think it is going to be a close race between the republican and democrat, and especially if the republican is really scary-- I would vote democrat even if I liked another party better.

I plan on voting for a combination for all 3 - democrat, republican and 3rd party.
In Texas my democratic and 3rd party votes won't count, but I still want to express my rights. -
Alright, ya'll convinced me. I did vote Green when it was available. And kind of like @wheres_c, where I live is so conservative that non-conservative votes don't count for much, but I did my part!
