Lately, my son's (almost 5 mos) has been waking up crying during his night sleep every 30 min to 1 hr the first 4 hours of sleep. He doesn't seem to be crying because he's hungry or wet. The only thing I can think of is that he's been drooling a lot and chewing on things because he's starting the teething process (no teeth yet). I'm kind of bewildered by this new behavior.

Poor thing! Is he overtired at all? What time does he go to bed at night?

My baby has started doing this for her first 2 hours of sleep at night. Its really frustrating

@Mrsbells: my only hunch is either teething (i,e, excessive drool and constantly trying to teeth on something) or a growth spurt or maybe even both, Not sure when I should call the ped just to make sure this is ok.

My baby is 11 weeks so I'm guessing in my case its too early for teething. I have a ped appointment this week so I will mention it when I go, but so far she goes through lots of different phases so I'm guessing this too will pass

If you think he's teething you could try Tylenol before bed?
You could also try putting him to bed earlier. I have read a ton on infant sleep and most say that constant waking in the first few hours after bedtime are classic signs of overtiredness. we aim to have LO in bed 2 hours after his last nap and that has been as early as 5:45!

My hunch is that he's waking up after each sleep cycle and can't self-soothe himself back to sleep. Months 4-5 were really tough for us because of that (it was the age of 40-minute catnaps) but he grew out of it. Teething may contribute, but typically doesn't cause that kind of disruption. I also would try getting him to bed a bit earlier.
