So I told myself I wouldn't be THAT mom who worries incessantly about milestones and other things related to my LO but here I am worrying about my LO and her lack of babbling. She's 8 months and doesn't babble at all. As in mamama bababa. I'm hoping she'll babble by her 9 month appointment but I'm starting to stress. She laughs, makes gasping noises when she's excited, and has started to mimic. She's on track in terms of her physical milestones. But no babbling! Any similar experiences?

M. was a late babbler. I said that if she wasn't babbling before her 8 month visit that I'd push for early intervention... but like the day before her appointment she started and by 10.5 months she had her first (and still only) word. She does babble up a storm now at 11 months.

@betsyboop: I can't say yet but I have heard...theory? I don't know if there is any science behind it, actually, that if they are ahead with their physical, then they may lag with their oral. I guess they are from two completely different parts of the brain.
I didn't walk until I was 18 months, but yet I was FULL ON speaking at 12 months. My mom says she was always so worried, but then again everyone assured her that since I was significantly ahead with speech, my physical had lagged a bit.
If this theory is right, then my son will be just like me. He is 4m and he babbles ALL DAY. Everyone we meet says he "talks" more than a baby his age should. Yet the kid has issues with head control and has zero interest in rolling over. -
@Mrs. Jacks: By early intervention do you mean speech therapy? I've heard varying opinions on whether to wait until 12 months to start or to go ahead if they haven't babbled by 9 months.

@TurtleDoves: I've heard that too! My LO isn't really ahead with her physical milestones though. She did roll early but at 8 months is only doing the army crawl. I think if she were physically advanced I wouldn't be worrying quite so much.

Late babbler here. LO just started saying "bababa", "mamama", and "vavava" last week, at 9 months and 3 weeks.
He's not that advanced in terms of physical milestone either. He army crawls really fast but still doesn't crawl on hands and knees yet. He can pull up while holding my hands but doesn't pull up on furniture or anything like that.

@betsyboop: I just wanted her to have a total evaluation before deciding on a therapy. Sometimes they need speech and occupational, sometimes other issues are identified that the parent may have missed.
I agree with the verbal vs motor divide. Our first daughter spoke words at 7 months but didn't walk until 13 months. She was putting all her energy into language.

Lo is 9 months and just started saying bababa. Other than that he doesn't babble much, but laughs and yells all the time. He also doesn't have any teeth yet (though probably not related haha). He is crawling like a champ and cruising.
One kid I used to nanny for never said a word until he was two years old!! But then of course immediately spoke full sentences! I guess kids just develop at their own rate. I wouldn't worry!

My LO didn't start babbling until he was 11 months. He would say mama, ba, na, ga, ya, and ha but not repeat the consonant sounds.
I was told not to worry too much until 12 months and to expect boys to be a little later in developing communication skills.

@betsyboop: at least she's trying! My LO had not even attempted to go on his knees. I worry a lot about LO's milestones too but try to remind myself that all babies develop differently and to enjoy each moment now.

LO only says "umma" or "mama" and she is 9.5 months old. I was super worried, and like @Mrs. Jacks, was thinking about early intervention if she didn't start saying ANYTHING by 9 months. My LO is not a babbler, and she is very quiet. I wonder if most of her energy is in her physical development. She army crawls very quickly, cruises, pulls herself up very easily even against the wall, and recently climbed up a flight of stairs!

@Sammyfab: That sounds like my LO. She'll say ma and ba but never a chain of consonant sounds. I too have heard that boys tend to verbally communicate later.
@NerdBee: She's trying, but when she really needs to get somewhere (i.e. chase after the dog), she resorts to the army crawl! And yes, we should just enjoy our LO's! I keep telling myself that but I have moments of panic.
@caffeinated: I think my LO is on the quieter side too. She also tends to be shy around other adults but loves babies and will gasp up a storm. A flight of stairs...wow! She must keep you busy!

My little guy is 11 months and didn't babble much until just recently. I have friends who's kids say all kinds of things and here my little guy has only just started saying mama. Plus until recently, he's been pretty quiet in general. But the pediatrician says not to worry, that he's fine.
It's funny because I get all worried and freaked out that he's lagging -- and I recognize that same look in my friends' eyes when it comes to physical milestones. My little guy started walking at 8.5 months and now runs around the living room. I guess we all worry about something. -
@Mrs. Fox: I think the hardest part is seeing other LO's doing things that our LO's haven't gotten around to doing yet. It's really not a competitive thing, but I foolishly look at it as more of a benchmark when in the end, everyone does things in their own time! One of my closest mommy friends has a LO who babbles up a storm but at 7 months still hasn't rolled over and she stresses about it.
