It seems like the dentist was just trying to lighten the mood with a joke so that you wouldn't feel lectured about the flossing comment, which obviously they have to tell you that to make sure you're aware of it. It didn't work for you, but personally I would have laughed.

I guess she was just trying to make a joke, but yeah, I see how it sounded a bit rude. I used to go to a dentist who always lectured me on how I have to floss, gave me horrible painful cleanings, and signed me up for another appointment in half a year. I'm sure I was a pretty steady paycheck. Luckily DH goes to a different dentist and I decided to go to her instead. She lectured me a lot too, but she also helped me get over my fear of dental work enough that I got all my cavities taken care of on time, and recommended herbs and toothpaste that finally helped my gum problems. I see her a lot less often than that other dentist, but it's thanks to being a lot healthier. She's awesome
