I have had several friends / family members say that their 3rd birth was the most difficult, and in some cases, they had complications. If you have 3 kids, was this true for you? Of your 3 children, which was the easiest birth? Which was the hardest?

I only have two but I'm my moms third, and I was the only one that required any interventions. Still pretty minor- her water broke but contractions didn't start so they had to induce, then my heart rate wasn't responding well to the pitocin contractions so they were prepping to do a c section, but then everything went back to normal and she had a routine vaginal delivery. So not that bad just a bit scary for a few minutes.

I always thought labor got easier the more kids you had?

I don't have a third, but I remember that when I was in labor with LO #2, the nurse kept reassuring me that the birth would be quick and easy. She said that the third one is often more complicated, which really surprised me, as I was of the general mindset that each delivery gets a bit easier.

@T.H.O.U.: I thought so too. However, I know 4 ppl who said 3rd birth was the worst. My sister had her largest baby (almost 10 lb) and the epidural failed. One friend's baby had shoulder dystocia, which is a scary complication that leads to still births. And two friends from HB who had scary third birth experiences (I can't remember the details).

No way. Third birth was by far the easiest. I was induced for the first two and went into labor on my own with he third. My water broke at 7pm and he was born just after 11pm. My contractions were never too uncomfortable and I only had one minor tear.
My most difficult was my first, but I think that's because I had no clue what to expect. -
Ugh oh! Let's hope not. I'm due with #3 in about 5 weeks! I am actually terrified of not making it to the hospital on time because labor with #2 was so quick but now I'm terrified for other reasons.......

@Canoli: A lady at the store just looked at me (big belly now) and told me about her labors/births. Her 2nd labor was 2 hours, but first was a day, she was worried about having the 3rd in the car. 3rd was a day as well...and no complications.

My second and third were just about the same. Baby 3 was sunny side up so I did have more back labor but overall the pain, duration of labor, tearing etc was similar. Recovery was similar too (easy). My first was definitely more difficult-- induced and ultimately vacuum assisted.

My mom had three and her labors just got easier. I wonder if time between births makes a difference. My mom had 4.5 yrs and 5 yrs between births. Most moms now who have more than 2 seem to have them closer together

My mom had 4 and she said each labor was progressively shorter and easier.

My mom had 3, and says her 3rd was by far the easiest, and the most positive experience. Also the fastest. Her labor with me was close to 40 hours, labor with my middle brother was 20ish, and labor with my youngest brother was less than 10. She also had an episiotomy with first labor, bad year with second, and zero tearing with her third labor.

#1 was the easiest pregnancy, longest labor (5 days stuck in the hospital) and he came at 35 weeks while we were on vacation (that's why I was in the hospital for 5 days, they couldn't help me progress).
#2 hardest pregnancy, easiest delivery. I had ptl starting at 26 weeks, bedrest at 28-35 weeks, kidney stones twice, then induced 1 day after my due date.
#3 fairly easy pregnancy, more ptl but no bedrest. She came 5 days early, my water broke on it's own for the first time just as the Dr. was coming in to break it, epi failed and hurt like you wouldn't believe, he missed the spot and had to re-do it 3 times, then I was pushing before the third try took effect. She had meconium in her lungs, while they were working on her I hemorrhaged. I had a swarm of nurses, Dr.'s and the anesthesiologist over me. I was pretty close to a blood transfusion, but thankfully by the next morning I was okay'd by my Dr.
I had always heard the third was the easiest, not so in my case.

For me my second delivery was the easiest but she was my smallest baby. I was very fearful of stillbirth with my third, not entirely sure why but I did kick counts constantly with her and barely did them at ask with my others. Her delivery (c-section) was only more difficult in that she was so freaking enormous it took quite a lot of pushing and pulling to get her out. My pregnancy with her was the easiest up until the last couple weeks when I was borderline ICP and couldn't sit properly because there was no space to bend and I had to be reclined at all times. I was truly a beached whale.
My mom's third delivery had complications whereas her first two didn't. She had a complete uterine prolapse while pushing out my sister. She had wanted more children but was advised to not have another pregnancy.

Not my own experience, but my sister has 3 kids: her first was an induction, her second a c-section and her third a v-bac with no pain medication. For her, her third birth was definitely her easiest. Thought I would throw that out there to offer some reassurance!

@oliviaoblivia: I think after birthing two perfectly healthy kids it's just scary to think about the third because gosh....how lucky is it to have 3 perfectly healthy babies? So I get why you were worried. And so happy it turned out well

My friend just had her third and had a pretty major hemorrhage but actually that was the birth with the fewest problems. It still makes me nervous!My sister seemed to have pretty normal deliveries for all three kids so I'm just going off that and ignoring everything else I hear!

no experience, but based on the difference between my first two (2.5 days of labor vs. 2.5 hrs of labor), i'm just worried that a third would be 2.5 min of labor

My sister's 3rd required an emergency csection after the cord was wrapped around his neck.
My sister in law's 3rd was her 3rd csection and her complications were so bad she could have died. It was very scary! I think she said t was mostly due to having 3 csections, though I'm sure there was more to it.
My friend's 3rd labor was so fast she had him in ER triage without an epidural and no one was prepared! It was her most stressful labor. -
Nope. My third was the fastest and easiest labor, delivery and recovery.

@KayKay: this. My second came so quickly I am scared that my third will be born on the kitchen floor, and the hospital is literally six blocks away!
My first pregnancy actually had more complications with both pregnancy and delivery (bleeding in the first trimester, then water breaking early but labor not starting, leading to an induction). The only issue with my second pregnancy was that my epidural didn't take effect in time! Both babies were also small ( 5.5 lbs) - I don't know what I'll do if #3 is massive!

Interesting. My nurse midwife made the same comment about third babies after I had an easy labor and delivery with DS2. Seems counterintuitive.

I hope not! If we have another it'll be my third labor (second child, fifth pregnancy at least, geez this having kids thing is more complicated than I ever expected). Though both of mine were so out of the ordinary that the next would have to pretty wild to be worse.

Our third was the fastest labour (2.5hrs from first contraction), and in a way it was the hardest, but only because there was no time for an epi. Dialating quickly is super painful;).

Yes, by a long shot. Definitely my hardest, plus I had a serious complication.
Our L and D nurses said that 3rd deliveries are always a wild card. 2nd is always easiest than the 1st (they say), but you just never know with #3!
My second was definitely my easiest.
