Ways to save money

    @gingerbebe: high-low is a good way to put it. We will spend on certain high quality things that will last (nice stroller, clothes and shoes for adults) and good quality food. But I also do tons of sale shopping and bargain hunting for household stuff and kids clothes. I think not eating out is a big saver for us. We eat out maybe once a week. "Cheap" takeout isn't really a thing here (and we don't really do fast food), so if we are going out, it's to a restaurant and automatically at minimum €40. We also don't have a TV, so no cable bills, and we don't have a car, so none of those expenses either. When we travel, we try to use points for hotels and we are flexible when possible to find cheaper airline tickets.

    Oh, I cut my son's hair as well. I am pretty good with the clippers now and my stylist gave me some tips on how to do the front. I would never cut my own hair though, I have too many complicated cowlicks.

    @Coral: I did see that you can also get it with the fire stick! My only question is...does it work for only once device or can I use it on multiple tvs at the same time?

    These are all wonderful tips! Keep them coming ladies! I'm going to officially give up going to the salon. Although it's not often...maybe 2-4 times a year...I'm letting go. MIL is going to dye my hair this weekend so let's see lol

    @bubblegum: This thread is absolutely fascinating. I am keeping it to read again later when I have more time!

    I have a bit of a spending problem ... not like major credit card debt or big ticket items, but $5 here, $10 there, and it adds up!!!

    We are moving in April and we REALLY need to stick to a budget while we have two mortgages (before our current house sells).

    @bubblegum: I'm seeing that sling is offering 7 day trial (but you have to cancel). I might do that just to see it in person! I'll keep you posted!

    @wrkbrk: Yay! I'm glad I'm not the only one getting use from it!

    Ouch two mortgages is a hurt piece but hopefully this thread helps a lot!

    @snowjewelz: Yes if you do let me know!! My main question is if I have sling TV and more than one device, can I stream on multiple tvs?

    @bubblegum: I mean I am hopeful that wont happen ... but realistically it very well may!!!!! All depends on who wants to buy our house! Haha.

    @bubblegum: Yes you can!

    You can watch Sling TV on all of your favorite compatible devices. ... If you subscribe to our Sling Blue service you can enjoy up to three streams of these channels at one time! This means you can enjoy FOX on your big screen, while your computer streams AMC, and catch up on the news with CNN on your mobile device.

    @wrkbrk: of course!

    @snowjewelz: Ohhh so only if you have Sling blue? Now is this a silly question...does sling blue provide everything that sling orange does plus the extra channels listed under sling blue?

  14. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

    @bubblegum: Nope. I'm on the site now and if you click back and forth, most overlap but not all. For example orange has ESPN but blue doesn't. Only the $50 ultimate package has both.

    But it seems like you can get either and then also add extra packages for $5 (sports is $10).

    @snowjewelz: That's bad!! Such a steal. I think I'm going to dive in this March. One major thing that will suck is not being able to record shows but hey it beats a big bill!

    @bubblegum: it does seem like they have on demand... but not sure what's on there... i think if it's going to be cheaper.. u can afford to get sling TV plus like hulu or something for shows

    @snowjewelz: That's pretty cool. Yes for sure will look into that too!

    @bubblegum: So you can have it for multiple devices but I believe it can only be used by one device at a time. So, we have it in two rooms but can only use one tv at a time (which isnt a problem.)

    @Coral: That's a bummer!!

    @bubblegum: I believe so...I would double check.

    @Coral: I'll have to find out. It is super rare if we have two tv's on at the same time but it would be nice to know. I did the math and because I would have to keep comcast internet in order to not break the contract, along with sling and hulu I would be saving $75! not bad

    @bubblegum: I wish I can add exactly the channels I want tho!

    @snowjewelz: Agreed! Thankfully I just have to add Disney Junior, MTV, and VH1. $15 extra bucks but that's fine

    Like others have mentioned, we cut our own hair, makes sure to buy necessities when there are double layers of discounts/deals, switched our phones to Ting, and don't eat out without a coupon or using our credit card cashback to pay for it.

    We really are gung-ho about tax-advantaged accounts beyond just retirement. I have an HSA that is invested and this year I also have a dependent care and medical FSA. I have my paycheck set to go to three different bank accounts so I never even see the money I've earmarked for saving.

    We meal plan with plantoeat and I check the fliers at two stores to see what is on sale weekly. I check Sprouts for produce and meat sales and our local Kroger affiliate for everything else. That way I only have to shop two stores and I'm pretty confident I'm getting the best deals without wasting too much time driving around. Once a month I go to the bread store outlet near us and get tons of bread/bagels/buns for 1/4 price.

    I also do a lot of research for anything over $40. Online reviews, Consumer Reports, forums. In the time it takes me to research, I'm either convinced it is an awesome idea and know what a good price for it is, or I've decided I don't need it that much.
