This evening I ran a yellow light and got pulled over. I frantically explained to the cop that I had to go to the bathroom.....very badly....and apologized. And he let me off and even offered to assist me in illegally parking in front of a busy intersection in order to use a restaurant's bathroom! It was the truth, I really HAD TO GO.

Dude it's not against the law to go through a yellow light! I would be pissed he pulled you over!!
I've only ever had one speeding ticket and I was going 75 on the highway in a 55mph zone so I didn't even try to talk my way out of it.

My dog has gotten me out of a couple of tickets! He is a cute, cuddly, massive Newfoundland dog and takes a lot of attention off of my bad driving.

I've always just been super polite and respectful. Turn the radio off while they're walking up, both hands on the wheel, "yes sir/officer," TOTALLY owning up to what I did (speeding/running a yellow that was aaactually red...), nothing too out of the ordinary, just not being an ass!

You are so lucky! I pulled the bathroom trick on a speeding ticket and the cop escorted me to a bathroom, then stood outside of for me!! Haha

Several years ago I promised to never speed in Idaho ever again. I've held true to that word (and I tend to drive through Idaho a fair amount). I bet he thinks I wasn't serious about that pledge, but I really was!

I never get out of tickets. DH has a magic police horseshoe shoved up his you know what and gets away with murder when he gets pulled over.

I have a red light ticket, it's the only thing on my driving record. It was red light cam though so no such luck talking my way out of it.

I've done the same as @ms.janedoe: and have never gotten a ticket from a live person. I have a couple warnings though. Once because I think he took pitty on me as I was late to work on a 1.5hr commute. Then I got a warning from a Trooper when I was on the way home from a baby shower so we talked babies and I guess he had a soft spot!

If you're in the intersection when it turns red, you're good! I've had to look it up before. That's BS. I've gotten off by saying I was running late for work and had a meeting to attend (80 in a highway work zone), that I was scared of the guy tailgating me (60 in a 30), that I wasn't even hitting the gas and was just rolling down a hill (45 in a 30 - he advised me to use the brakes next time). I got ticketed once and had to appeal it, but the magistrate let me off when I explained myself. It was for a red light, and i just said it was yellow (which it was!).

I have never gotten a speeding ticket, but I have gotten two warnings. I got out of the first one by tearing up a little and aplogizing profusely. I got out of the second one because the cop's son graduated from my high school (I had a bumper sticker with the school's name on my car). I went on and on about how I was a cheerleader and loved the school and he let me off. If either cop had been a woman I would have gotten a ticket for sure!!

I was unaware that running a yellow light was illegal if you were in the intersection when it was yellow. IE, it can turn red on you but if you're already out there, you're ok. You have a 3 second delay before the other lights turn green just for this reason.
I got a ticket for rolling through a stop sign. I had to go to traffic school. The cop was in NO mood that day!

I always just smile and say "I'm sorry. What did I do?" and then once they explain I just smile some more, apologize, and say that I had no idea, but I will never do it again. Worked on 3 separate occasions when I lived in Boston. Not bad! (Crying did not work, fwiw.)

@LAGS: I hate the red light cams! They have gotten me twice in the past 2 months. Once was when I couldn't have stopped when the light turned yellow, and it was yellow when I started going through (which they are supposed to correct for). The most recent time was a right turn I made, the video shows I did stop first, but I was a smidge over the line! COME ON! At least with those you don't get license points.
The only time I've gotten out of anything, I didn't even need to try. I was speeding on my way to work and it was like 8 in the morning, I was a block from work and the cop actually said, I don't like giving people tickets on the way to work so just slow it down. Nicest cop ever!
