I am going to a family friend's wedding and the couple did not set up a registry. Maybe because they already live together and don't need/want anything or maybe because they have recently come into a lot of money (like so much they don't need to work). I feel kind of dumb giving them cash, so I thought about a giving them a universal charity gift card and they can donate to a charity of their choice.
My sister doesn't think it's a good idea and if they wanted us to donate money they would have told us what they would like to donate to.
Charity gift card - cool idea or annoying? Money for someone who is already loaded?

i voted "other" could you make them something personal? i looove gifts like that and pinterest has some really good ideas.

I'd use the opportunity to get something personal made. Etched wine glasses with their initials? A commissioned painting of their house? Concert tickets for their favorite band?

I would NOT want a charity gift card. They may not expect anything. Really. So at least bring a card.

Maybe it's a cultural Asian thing, but i've always given cash as wedding gifts unless they've registered somewhere. I don't know if coming into money means that they don't want/expect cash. Do they have any hobbies? I received gift cards to a local wine/liquor shop to help grow our wine collection, and thought that was a nice personal touch.
I don't know if many people would want the charity gift card. It really depends on the couple, if they are into giving and all of that.

I agree with you on feeling funny giving cash if they clearly have a lot more of it than you. But I like the idea of a gift card for something useful, either a restaurant near them, or I like @Freckles: idea of the liquor store to grow their wine collection. I would have loved to receive something like that (though, we did not come into a lot of money so cash was also well received

Do you know their relationship story? We got a gift card to the restaurant where we had our first date and used it for the night after our wedding (since we left for our honeymoon on Monday morning). The giver had found the restaurant because we had included the story of our first date on our wedding website. I do think the charity website was a nice idea, but maybe this would be less controversial?

I would not want a charity gift. I think that is a personal choice of which charity they support (if any) and i'm sure they would rather have the money.

Something personalized would be really nice! Something you enjoyed, or something they enjoy (so if they like wine or beer, engraved wine or beer glasses, or a wine stop/opener, etc?) I agree cash is a weird gift. But if they have so much $ and don't want/need anything, they probably should have included a note saying "your prescence will be presents enough!!!"

I agree with something more sentimental. I was in a similar situation with a recent wedding and opted for an inscribed Bible with the couple's name.

Don't have their invitation framed or buy them any decor lol! I am 1/2 joking because three (yes THREE) separate guests spent a lot of money having my invitation framed which was really sweet and thoughtful, but none of them are my style at all and they're unfortunately in the back of the closet still.
I always like the idea of a nice pair of specialty drink glasses (martini, wine, highball, etc. depending on what they like to drink) paired with a top shelf liquor and any mixers needed to make a specialty drink. Those were by far our favorite off-registry gifts. Even if you already have a ton of those things they always need replacing and you can make it sentimental if you know what they enjoy drinking together.

Personally I think a charity gift card is nice.... but I do agree that if they wanted that they'd probably ask for that. My friend had a charity registry that we could donate to and she posted the info on her wedding website. I think everyone gave you lots of good ideas though!

We usually give money even if the couple has a registry. I always felt like the registry was more for the bridal shower?

I'd just give them cash, but that's what we always give for weddings. Even if they have a lot of money. You could also do a gift card to a nice restaurant or store.

Thank you for these great ideas everyone. I got a little more info from a bridesmaid since the groom is a family friend that I spent more time with when we were younger, but haven't seen recently. I was happy (but surprised) to be invited since I think of him as a cousin, but I haven't even met the bride. They are moving to another state in just a few weeks so they don't want a lot of "stuff".
We are going the wine route and I am going to pick a bottle from the state they are moving to. Hopefully thoughtful enough, but nothing they need to worry about during the move. -

In NY everyone gives cash....registry is for bridal shower gifts. I received cash (or check) from all of the 150 people that came to my wedding.
