We told our parents last night that we are pregnant. Already my mom has said the common lines "well in my day we didn't have OTC pregnancy test" "I'm amazed you kids even survived" That was after I had mentioned some of the foods I should avoid. The list goes on.
What are some of the best "well in my day..." lines that you have gotten?

Oh yes! My mom drank and smoked occasionally. "And you kids are just fine". And when my brother was born (11 years older than me) dads were just starting to be let in to the delivery room. My dad had a fight with the doctor to let him be in the room. You stayed in the hospital as long as you wanted after birth.
So yes, I got an ear full too!

We survived crib bumpers, tummy sleeping, and 'normal' products like Dreft and J&J. Also, mom can't believe the list of foods I can't eat.

Back then...
They didnt have swigs to make things "easy."
They used crib bumpers (so did I but I worried and tried to remove them which hasnt worked out so well.)
They rubbed baby's gums with god knows what.
Babies were apparently harder and moms did more.

Oh man...
Rice cereal at 2 weeks old, whiskey on the gums, smoking and drinking while pregnant, bumpers, thick blankets, car seats got ditched way sooner, junk food at 6 months old...the list goes on and on.

My SIL apparently rode cross-country in the front seat in her mom's lap as an infant. Yikes!

...they didn't baby wear and/or daddies never wore babies. People are always telling me this. But I know my parents, primarily my dad, wore me in a snugli - and they gave it to me when I had my LO.

Smoked, drank, bumpers, blankets etc. Somehow, it doesn't bother me - I shrug my shoulders at the comments and do it my way. I mean, I'm sure our kids will be agast at the techniques we used when they were small.

@runsyellowlites: @Bao: My car seat was a death trap! I use to play with it as a kid and would get pinched & hurt all the time. Apparently it was NOT a toy.
I also remember riding around with out a car seat at a very young age.

@googly-eyes: Dreft as opposed to more natural detergents (Charlie's Soap, Rockin Green, Method, Mrs. Meyers) or homemade detergent. I think my crunchy tendencies offend her.

This caused a big row at my IL's house! My FIL said to MIL, during some conversation about what I can and can't eat, "well you smoked and drank all through your pregnancies and both of ours are alright". Well she hit the roof!! FIL couldn't understand what he'd done wrong and kept saying "well, you did... people did in our day..." but MIL (who likes to pretend she's perfect) just got more and more upset!! It was so awkward!

My mom often talks about the crazy things her mother and grandmother did when she was a child (like giving her warm milk with a little bit of whiskey or coffee in it, or not having any seat belts in cars) but never as a way of implying, "We should still do things this way," more like, "Wow, I can't believe how far we've come!"

My dad isn't even that old and he is always suggesting a drop of whiskey to 'relax' LO! I think (hope!) he's half joking because he knows I would never in a million years. When I was first pregnant and telling my mom about current car seat rules she just couldn't believe kids had to be rear-facing for so long. She was like, angry about it, haha. I think some of this stuff does bring about a bit of defensiveness in the older generation because for the most part, they all thought they were doing the best things, which at the time they probably were! It's like they don't want us young whippersnappers to think they were irresponsible or uneducated about childcare so it comes off in those 'in my day' type comments.

Apparently when my brother was born (in '75) breastfeeding wasn't the preferred method, hospitals were pushing formula (according to my mom) and my mom was the weird-o for wanting to nurse!

My mom thinks its fine to use gear from when my brother was an infant 20 years ago for my kid.... hell my brother used my carseat from 1984 almost 10 years later... its a good thing my parents never got in any car accidents

My mom wanted me to use MY crib from 27 years ago! She also smoked and said I used to sleep on my side-she tried to convince me back sleeping was pointless! All the new gear is, apparently, "not necessary". Sure makes life easier for us!!

@googly-eyes: I'm not snobby about it at all. There are just certain things I prefer to use in my house, especially since I have skin sensitivities and allergies. I agree with @JerricaBenton, in that perhaps it is a bit of a defensive mechanism and our parents/grandparents don't want us to think that they weren't doing the best they could or were irresponsible in any way.

FIL told me he was really worried that I *wasn't* getting a c-section. He called it a "seed sectioning" and told me that if MIL hadn't gotten a "seed sectioning" DH would've died at birth, because they're the only safe way to have a baby! hahahaha!

Luckily, I haven't heard *too much* of this, but I've heard some random gems lately from people from MY generation. Like, yesterday I was told that an infant can't even be in the same room as a TV that's on, because their brains aren't developed enough and it will "scramble their brains".
What sucks is that DH will listen to some of this "advice" because he does 0 research of his own (well, so far...we still have time). So then it becomes MY job to track down information and present it to him disproving whatever he's heard recently. So it's like I have two jobs now---fun!
Not that I think TV is good for kids or anything! But I think if I watch a movie while breastfeeding, my baby's brain will be just fine.

@evansjamie: could be! I think my mom and mil just think DH and I are silly and over the top... And I think they probably just don't remember the parenting "trends" (expert advice etc) they followed!!

@MrsSCB: Yea, that's how I've always taken these kinds of comments. More of a "wow" factor.
I was over at my IL's on the weekend and they have my FIL's crib from when he was an infant. MIL was telling me that "at first" LO will go in there while at their house. I'm not so sure because the rungs on it are like... 2.5 inches apart! hahaha I think a small enough baby could fit right through them!
