Her poor family. She could have had a heart condition, or an undiagnosed clotting condition, or had a stroke, or ruptured her aorta. There's all sorts of natural conditions that can be brought on our worsened by labor.

A previous version of this story said Shoemake died of a pulmonary embolism. According to Shoemake's family, the cause of death has not been determined.
