Just curious. I wasn't, but as a nurse I know my rights as a patient and for my next LO I will be eating if I want!

No & I had to pace myself the first time I ate afterwards. I was so hungry but I didn't want to eat too fast & make myself throw up!

No. I ate a huge breakfast the morning of my induction. At around 2pm my hunger pains were worse than my contractions so DH snuck me a few french fries from the cafeteria...just enough to take the edge off. Those were the most delicious french fries ever.
I threw them up later when they drugged me up for my c section. Muahahaha. Totally worth it.
ETA: Since I did throw up because I ate during labor, I can appreciate why they don't want you to. But I still would have snuck those french fries anyway. It's cruel to make a laboring woman do the hardest work of her life go without food or even water! Ice chips don't cut it!

I think I will be, but sort of only on the down-low lol. I am seeing a midwife practice that delivers in the hospital. From what I've heard from my friend who delivered with them, they have no problem with you eating and drinking during labor, but the labor nurses do and will yell at you. It seems to be a point of contention between the midwives and nurses. So I sort of expect that I will be able to have what I want, but we'll probably have to hide it from the hospital staff other than the midwives.

I was until I was officially admitted. Then I wasn't , but honestly I didn't want to!
I may have sent dh for a midnight happy meal run and ate my chicken nuggets in the recovery room . I don't know that they were too thrilled about that by after 28 hours of labor I was STARVING

I was offered jello from the nurses. I also asked if I could drink some juice because I knew my blood sugars were tanking. They said yes, but pick which one you would prefer to vomit back up. They were right, I threw it up after delivery

No and all I wanted was food. After my C-section I was like "I want water and I want food" they gave me water which they said to drink slow...I chugged it so then they refused to give me food. I was starving and crying by the time we got back to my room so my husband snuck down to the hospitality room and got me some crackers.

Yes, hospital births both times and they were fine with me eating and drinking.
I really didn't feel like eating, but did since I figured I would need the energy the first time. My labor went very fast and I ended up throwing everything up while in transition.
The second time I didn't want to, but they encouraged me so I had a Larabar and water since my labor was entirely different. It still went fast, but I didn't throw up this time! I remember being super thirsty during labor.

I don't know? By the time I got to the hospital I was in transition so it was the last thing on my mind.

I was on the liquids only for my hospital labor - for 60+ hours. It was awful! A kind nurse smuggled me some yoghurt, and my DH snuck me a few almonds, etc. The minute they rolled me from OR to recovery after my unplanned c-section I did not shut up until they had me full of ice chips and my food was ordered for my room. I think 4 separate nurses brought me ice chips!

My midwife made me toast and jam once we got to the hospital but once I had my epidural I was nil by mouth until I was close to pushing, at which point I was allowed a little Powerade for energy.
pomegranate / 3008 posts
I have no idea if I was allowed to or not. I had no desire to eat during labor but since I spent the majority of my labor at home it wouldn't have been an issue.

Haven't been there yet, but I know my midwives/hospital don't restrict food/water during labor.

Yes at the hospital until I got the epidural. I didn't want to eat anything though. I just sipped Powerade.
honeydew / 7091 posts
Yep! At first I didn't think I was allowed, so I was sneaking bananas and energy bars that I brought with me, but then my nurse asked if I wanted a turkey sandwich. Heck yeah!!
No problems from eating, but I had an epidural so maybe it's because I didn't have to feel the painful contractions?

I voted "no - hospital birth" because the hospital didn't let me eat during labor. In reality I did most of my laboring at home and I ate a lot.
During the 40 hours I labored at home I walked to a store to get a smoothie, later I ate a lamb chop on the floor between contractions, then I sucked down a box of pouches I had purchased for LO, with lots of other snacks I can't recall in between. I wish I had a picture of my doula's face as I chowed down on that lamb chop. She was convinced I would throw it up later but everything stayed down just fine. Once I got to the hospital they only let me have water.

I voted other--I was allowed all the liquids, ice chips, and jello I wanted.

I honestly don't know if I was "allowed" to. I was in labor for 24 hours and was not even remotely hungry the entire time.

@NurseMommy: Yes, I had a three day induction though. I was also allowed to eat after I got an epidural too.

Yes - my Dr. suggested I order some room service since it was going to be a long night... lol it all came up later (TMI!)

Yes - this was one of my criteria for choosing a hospital! I didn't miss a meal. Plus, we had a fridge in the room for drinks/snacks, and the nurses were constantly bringing me graham crackers and juice.

I don't remember what the policy was. But I threw up multiple times anyway and had no desire to eat.
nectarine / 2994 posts
Nope, I was only allowed iced chips. I wasn't hungry though until afterwards!

No. By the the time I delivered, I hadn't eaten in 36 hours.

I think I could eat and drink before I got my epidural.

The first time once I got an epidural they said no more food for you, just ice chips. I was soooooooooooo hungry.
The second time as soon as I knew I was in labor I ate energy bars and drank gatorade. I stashed a bunch in my purse before we went to the hospital. They also said no food for you (diff hospital) but they would let me eat all the italian ice I wanted. I ate a lot of italian ice. And I snuck some energy bar and gatorade.

I could until I got an epidural. I ate a little anyways. I can't go 12 hours without food!!

Yeah clear liquids jello, Popsicles, Italian ice, water, sprite, ginger ale, and chicken broth but I only ate some jello, Italian ice, and water
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
Yes, I was encouraged to eat and drink by my midwives. I was 8cm on my way to the hospital, and my doula and I stopped at Mac's to get Gatorade and granola bars. Food was on my mind, haha.

Nope. Thankfully I was only in active labor for like 5 hours. I did devour that hamburger afterwards though.

My midwife wanted me to eat but I had zero appetite! I just chugged coconut water. I wasn't hungry until about 9 hours after DD was born but had a smoothie and some toast right after thanks to my midwives insisting.

I was induced and got to eat during the beginning phase of contractions.

No, but I was very sick and had zero interest in food.
