I'm hoping it comes more naturally for me too especially as I'm 39 weeks pregnant! I always feel uncomfortable with other people's babies.

I was never around babies, never babysat, etc., before having my own. I was nervous around babies, didn't know what to really do.

You will know what to do with your own baby. promise.

No! I could barely hold a baby. When I had my LO, it was so natural. Its amazing really!

I've been comfortable with babies for as long as I can remember. My mom even says when I was a toddler I'd help the bigger kids get ready to go in the afternoons, and mother them. And I'm a nanny now. It makes me feel a lot better about having kids, but the catch is that I sometimes have to be careful around new moms. They really don't want you to be better with their babies than they are!

I was mayyyyybe okay with babies before LO . . . but once you become a mama it's like a switch gets flipped that, while you are still nervous/ tentative--I mean, c'mon, we're talking about 6/7 pound noodles that are the most important thing(s) in your whole world!--but it's so so different!

I also can't believe what a silly willy I am with my LO - making up songs and stories! Anything to make her smile.

It's always different when they're your own. I'm still awkward around other people's babies. I don't know them well enough to know what they like.

Nope!!! I'm terrible around children! Still am!!! My nephew actively avoids me because I think I make him nervous, hahaha. And I had NEVER changed a diaper before having my own baby! And I had only held a newborn maybe like TWICE and it made me soooooo nervous doing it.

But I'm sooooo different around my own kid. I don't think it's made me more of a kid-person because I'm still weird and awkward around my SIL's children, but I definitely know what I'm doing with my own son (now, after 3 months - in the beginning I was a bit of a wreck). So don't worry - you'll figure it out with your own children!

Oh, and my advice, before you have a baby (whether by birth, adoption, etc), take a Newborn Basics class or something. That really helped me feel a LOT more confident about being around my new baby. I was soooooooo scared before that because I've really never dealt with babies, but the class teaches you all the basics (diaper changes, swaddling, bathing, feeding, etc), so I felt a little better when I finally had my baby. It was still a lot of trial and error, but you figure it out as you go and soon enough, you feel totally comfortable and confident in your skills!

I've been OK with holding and rocking/bouncing/comforting babies, but not really entertaining or comforting a really unhappy baby. With my one nephew who I have spent a lot of time with, I've gotten way way better and now I can entertain him and everything, but it wasn't super natural at the very first. I'm pretty sure it's going to be easier with my own-- I'll let you know in 7 weeks or so!

I had almost no baby experience before having M. I wouldn't say that it comes immediately (I would imagine everyone feels a little fumbly with their first) but it comes quickly and naturally. You become a pro at YOUR baby even if you're not a baby pro.

Kids and babies terrify me! There better be a maternal switch coming, because I'm 35 weeks! I believe the PPs and others I've heard that it's totally different with your own kid

Not at all! Every baby I ever interacted with loved me and I had no clue what to do with them. It was all instinct when I had my own though. Now, I love babies but I still feel a little odd around babies that aren't my own!
