It's a requirement to stay two nights at my hospital to make sure baby is healthy and thriving. With my first I was ready and eager to leave by discharge date. With my second I wanted to leave the next day and be home with my toddler.

I was supposed to be discharged after 4 hours, but DD was born at 2:30am and the midwife talked me into staying. Though the day was a blur, I totall could have stayed longer- we were there for only 12 hours after she was born! I could have used some more sleep with the nurses to help!

@grizz: same with me! I even work on the same floor as where I delivered!

DS was born at 6:45pm. Originally I wanted to go home the same day he was born (4-6 hours after the birth) but my midwife convinced me to stay overnight since it would have been super late. I still wish I left that same night, I hated staying in the hospital and didn't get any sleep.

DD was born at 3pm and we were required to stay for 24 hrs. We went home at 3pm the next day I couldn't get out of there soon enough

@Mrs. Taco: Are you sure ? lol

Well, I aquired this room mate at 3am the day after I gave birth. I was obviously exhausted and just had surgery that night (for a kidney stent).

He partner and mom were in the room and pretty quiet so all was well.

Until 7am the next morning when all her family started to arrive. They were loud, and sick and coughing. Her baby was premature and under 5lbs. She didn't know she was pregnant until she was 8 months along.

They (including her) were smokers and went out multiple times to smoke, coming in and smelling of smoke. I was freaking out because they were sick, bringing in 3rd hand smoke and just would not let me get any rest. The nurses requested they go to the family room to meet...and they did for about 30 minutes and then all came back in again.

She also used our shared bathroom and got blood all over the toilet seat.

...and that's when I lost my mind and was bawling at the nurses station. It was a lot to handle for an emotional new mom.. lol

I would have loved to go home the same day I delivered. As it was, we requested early discharge and left almost 24 hours after delivery. I hate hospitals! If we had a birthing center I would have chosen that, and I would LOVE a home birth next time.

I loved being in the hospital with my second because it was nice to have people around to cook and clean, and help out. Our hospital's food is actually pretty good. With number 3 we left early and left like we couldn't get home fast enough. The older girls were really anxious for us to get home, middle DD cried every time we talked because she missed us so much (I had LO during a huge snow storm so they had been at my moms for 2 days before I delivered so we wouldn't have to worry about driving them there during the storm.)

@Urchin: oh. My. Word. I would have flipped OUT.

We only stayed one night, I was grateful for the help of the nurses but both DH and I were itching to get home. We felt prepared and the nurses didn't seem worried about us

@Foodnerd81: This was exactly my experience! I was like, yeah, if you're kicking my husband out you can definitely have my baby.

Ok in that case, I would have wanted to leave too!

I wanted to leave and sleep in my comfy bed! Also: I wanted some privacy so I could experience with what BFing positions worked for me.
I might also use the nursery next time. I wanted to the first time but was too nervous to let lo out of my sight.

@TurtleDoves: me too...I definitely think I will send LO #2 to the nursery for a few hours at least to hopefully get some sleep!

I have mixed feelings-one the one hand, I was ready to go home and hang out with my baby, but on the other hand...it sure was nice to have help with the baby at night!

Oh my gosh, yes! I had a c-sec and was supposed to stay 48 hours, but I begged to leave at 36 hours. It was so crowded. I had a roommate, there was no room for DH to stay amd help, the bed was super uncomfortable and people were in and out at all hours. I had never been so exhausted in my life. I would have done cartwheels when they told me I could go, if it weren't for the whole surgery-thing.

No, I was terrified to go home because I was scared I wouldn't know what to do to comfort LO when she cried! She was a pretty fussy newborn, and it freaked me out that even the nurses had trouble figuring out how to soothe her. I asked a nurse to come home with me (half jokingly), but she politely declined

    Nope because...

    1) I absolutely love my hospital and the nurses, especially this one NICU nurse. She was awesome!!!

    2) DS spent our 2 days there in NICU so we didn't room with him. I hadn't really cared for him except go to NICU every 3 hours to change his diaper and feed him. He was hooked up to wires for monitoring.

    3) My pain level was okay-ish at the hospital. I was afraid I wouldn't know how to manage it and care for a newborn if the pain level was to increase. Thankfully, pain level wasn't too bad and a couple of strong doses of ibuprofen helped!

    4) My house was FULL to the brim with family coming to help. I was anxious just thinking about it, and was confirmed when we did go home. Just walking through the door was overwhelming because everyone was telling us to do or that. Ahhhhh!!!! The hospital was nice and calm, and the food was pretty good!

I stayed for 4 days, we were even discussing a 5th. I loved being in the hospital! I had a private room, private bathroom, catered food, nursery with special bathing stations for the kidlets, etc etc. The only thing I missed was that the room did not have a TV.

I was absolutely not ready, but only because I had to leave the boys in the hospital. If they had been able to come home with me, I'm sure I would have been very ready to be home.

No, because LO was in the NICU so I wanted to have a room at the hospital for as long as possible in order to be close. I stayed 4 nights, and would have stayed 5 if insurance would have covered it!

next time will be different since I'll have a LO at home, but I know 3 nights for sure due to a c-section.

We were ready because we had so many visitors and felt like we go so little sleep while we were there. I am thankful we got the LC help though and that my milk came in before we left. We were there 2 nights.

@TurtleDoves: @hilsy85: I didn't think that I would this time but sending her to the nursery was really nice! I was able to sleep A LOT better just knowing that someone was watching her the whole time. Of course, whenever they brought her back I'd check her for her birth marks and hair patterns that I'd noticed to make sure I'd gotten the right baby haha!
