We were going to take DS, but he's 16 months... and wasn't sure if he was too young to really enjoy most of the kids' science museum.
When did you first take your LO?

I started taking LO to museums as soon as he was walking. Even if he doesn't "get" the exhibits, its a new-to-him place indoors where he can run around!

I'd start from day one. There is just so much for them to look at. Nanny LO preferred the Boston science museum to children's museum and the aquarium. The first time we went she was a little past 1 year. We would have gone sooner but that's how old when we moved there. She LOVED running down the long hallway, looking/ touching the exhibits, and seeing all the big kids. They also had a little kid area which was awesome.

My LO started to enjoy museums around 2 years old. Now at almost 3 they're even more fascinating.

@hilsy85: when you go to NY museums, do you check your stroller? Or do you go without one? Also do you usually go in the am or wait until later after his nap?

We took C around 12 months, but i think it would be a lot more enjoyable for her now! We did a childrens museum last week on vacay and she did great and had lots to do

it depends on the museum. we've been taking the kids to the children's museum since they were 1. i took charlie to a science museum when he was 3 and he had a great time, but it was really geared for kids a little bit older. even at 4 i think he would have enjoyed it a lot more.

@travelingnanny: I am taking C (8 months) to the Boston science museum next week! I hear they have a baby area and we are getting passes, so I figure we have nothing to lose!

We haven't taken him there... I have been several times but there isn't a child area and it's definitely geared toward school-age kids. We usually just stick with the children's museum.

I can't wait to take E! There's always knobs to hit and things to look at. Ours is very child friendly

We started taking J2 probably around 9 months. There are lots of things for them to explore, texture, lights, social interactions, etc. He probably really started "playing" and getting really involved around 18 months.

@plantains: it depends on the weather lately...it's been so frigid that I feel like he's not warm enough in the ergo, so I bring our g luxe with the muff on it, and I check it. We've usually gone in the afternoon after his nap--he's usually up by 1/130 so still plenty of time, where as he is asleep by 1130, and most things don't open til 10 or so, so it would feel rushed! And most of our classes are in the morning. We just came back from teh children's museum in manhattan actually--that was quite the trip from BK heights!

I had a work trip that took place at Liberty Science Center (NJ) and DH took my 18 month around, explaining everything. She had a blast, for an hour or so, especially the bubble exhibit. Then took LO to the Reuben Fleet Science Center (San Diego) at 2 1/2 years and they have a huge preschool/toddler section that is similar to a children's museum but with gears, conveyor belts and suction vacuums. That lasted over 2 hours and she was very independent. The demonstration was computerized helicopters to music so very appropriate for all ages. If we added a movie in it would have been a lot longer. Fun, fun!!
Exploratorium (San Fran) and Seattle Science Center, at age 3, are next on my list!
Here's a link to the San Diego preschooler one...

It depends what's there. One near here has a lot of hands on things for toddlers. I started taking DS before he was two.

I believe you are near me and both of the science centers in our area would be great at his age. Both have really cute kids areas you just need to watch for field trips, so 2-4 is a great time to aim for if it isn't nap time. The one in AA is definitely better though.

I know that LO loved going to the aquarium at "this age"... I have been scared to take her to a normal museum!
