2 would be the cut off for me. i'm trying to wean now only because i think it has to be all or nothing for olive the addict. she is almost 17 months.

When do kids start walking up to you and saying, "Mommy, can I please have some of your milk?" That's when.

I agree that 2 would probably be around the end for my comfort level, but I think as long as mama/kid are cool with it, older's fine.

@MrsTiz: I probably would, especially if the child had dietary restrictions and the breast milk really helped to supplement. I think a lot of children to want to breastfeed longer are those who need it the most.
I would encourage them to start drinking it from a cup (pumped milk), but I wouldn't freak out if they still wanted to breastfeed at an older age. We're also homeschooling so Kindergarten wouldn't play into it.

I breastfed until I was four. I don't think it affected me negatively at all, I think it's fantastic that my mom was so dedicated to giving me what I needed.
I started asking for a sibling at age four and my mom told me she couldn't conceive while breastfeeding (she still didn't have periods - four years later!!!), so I quit. Cold turkey. And I got my little sister about a year later.
That little sister breastfed until age four as well, and then quit on her own. I think the majority of the time children will quit on their own when they are ready, and that's rarely past the age of 4 or so. Sometimes it's much younger!

Edit: I should note that past age two or so, we only nursed at nap time and bedtime. We were also taught manners, so we never walked up to my mom and pulled her shirt open or anything like that. We would tell her we were sleepy, she would take us into the bedroom, nurse us, and put us down for a nap.

I would love to make it to 1. But for my comfort level, I probably won't go much past that. Once it got to the point where my LO could say "booby in mouth" or start unbuttoning my shirt in public, I would think that's too old (for me).

@MrsTiz: I'm seriously hoping I take after my mom and don't get periods the entire time I breastfeed - can you imagine, she got ten years with no periods between my sister and I. Awesome. That alone is a good reason for extended breastfeeding! lol

I said 2.5 but I'm hoping to start trying for #2 shortly after LO's first birthday, so we may need to wean if I'm unable to get pregnant while breastfeeding.

My dd is 23 months old today. And I still nurse her 2-3x a day

I wish there was a 'no age is too old' choice. That's my viewpoint.

@Kemma: I totally agree about being able to teach breastfeeding manners at that point.

@sarac: I wish I could honestly be okay with nursing until any age knowing there is nutritional & emotional benefit regardless of age. I think that the lack of support & social perspective plays a large role on my comfort level though which I highly dislike. Who knows, maybe by the time I get there I won't care anymore! I do know I'll be so sad when P weans!!

I voted one year old but that may well change once my LO is here and I, hopefully, get into the swing of it.

We are still breastfeeding at almost 2 years old which I had never imagined I would do. I am so over it so I am weaning him but that is for me not him. I could see going longer if it was working for both people. Him pulling at me doesn't work for me. So we are working on that.

I know women who pump and provide it for old kids in cups and that's very cool. I wish my sister felt she could do that. She has an older child with leukemia and there is so much good stuff in breastmilk. But the stigma made it to difficult for her.

@MsLipGloss: too true! I guess my point was more that it's more of a manners / behaviour issue rather than a breastfeeding one!

@Kemma: I'm with ya there! I was just imagining with my luck, it would happen in a very public place and in front of a ton of people!

I think 2 years will be my cut-off, but maybe 2.5. I don't know.

2 would be the cutoff for me personally.
