Did they drop feeds themselves or did you decide to wean off night feeds? How did you know the time was right?

At the 6 month appointment the pedi said we could dilute her overnight bottles to wean her from night feedings. We started with 25% water for a few nights, then 50% water for a few nights, then 1 night of 75% water and she had dropped night feeding. She still woke up but was refusing the bottle so we didn't offer it again.

9ish months. A lot of people told us to drop them earlier, but kiddo is on the small side so I was happy to get up and give her extra calories, and it didn't affect her sleep (she wasn't dependent on the feedings, as far as I could tell) so we kept going until she stopped waking up for them herself.

At 8 months DD still wakes 1-2x to eat. Last night she slept through with no feedings, we eill see if it lasts. I plan to let her self wean.

At 7 months, M still wakes to eat sometimes. More often than not, actually. I'd love to wean him from it, but I'll wait til a year, when I start weaning him totally, if he doesn't stop on his own sooner.

Seven months. I started reducing the feeding time by one minute for a week. She didn't have a problem with it.

He dropped them sporadically around 11 months, but started truly STTN (bedtime to wakeup) at 13.5 months. prior to that if he ever woke I would nurse him because it was easiest.

I was doing a dreamfeed until around 9 months and then I dropped it and he didn't seem to notice a difference.
And then he dropped the 5:30 a.m. feed when he fully weaned around 14 months.

Around 8 weeks for both my girls. The last feed is between 5-6 pm. We get up at 5 am every morning though.

Close to 10 months for both kids, although we moved when the baby was 16 months and he started waking up again.

Around 7 months I think we just decided between bedtime and 5am we just rock and soothe him back to sleep without nursing if he woke up. It worked well. No muss no fuss. I found that he wasn't waking up hungry anymore and he didn't really miss it. If he's having a really bad night and is just refusing sleep, then I'll nurse him. That doesn't happen often though.
ETA: He has STTN on and off since 8 weeks. Even now at 9 months he may or may not have a wake up. But I just no longer nurse him.

11.5 months. I had to force her to drop them, but it helped her daytime eating.

10 months. But at that point, "night feeds" were really just super early morning feeds (like 4:30am). I didn't count her as STTN until I could stay in bed until 6ish.

Almost exactly at nine months. I tried weaning her before, using the trick of cutting her off a minute or two early for each nursing session, and it was an utter fail (crying on and off for two hours until I fed her again). So I let her take the lead and kept one night feeding until then. At nine months she just stopped waking up to eat.

It was around 8 months of age. This was something I didn't decide, I felt strongly that my son should be the one to determine if he needed a feed or not.

LO dropped night feeds on his own around 3 or 4 months.
for my friend, her pediatrician gave her the okay to CIO for MOTN feedings at 4 months for her twins.

He would've never dropped them all, he was waking 1-2 times to eat because I'd feed him. I dropped them at 11 months, 1 night of no midnight snack and he slept through to 5am.
I've read breastfed babies need to eat in the middle of the night until 9 months. Breastmilk is digested faster than formula.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: did they start sleeping through the night at 6 weeks or you stopped the night feeds then?
pomegranate / 3706 posts
My first LO dropped them herself around 9 months old, and now my second LO is starting to do the same thing (knock on wood!) and she's also 9 months old.

He dropped the feed on his own at 12 weeks (had done it a few times starting at 10 weeks). I have heard similar to Jetsa that many breastfed babies end up needing that night feed longer due to breastmilk's quick digestion. The pediatrician said that we should let it happen organically.

@Mrs tartan: they both started sleepin g through the night then.
If they hadn't, I wouldn't have dropped night feeds. My oldest (now 3) had a lot of sleep regressions and we didn't sleep train until she was 12 or 13 months.

I think it depends on the child. Both LOs were EBF, and I let them take the lead. LO1 dropped night feeds and started STTN between 6-8 weeks. LO2 did not consistently drop night feeds and STTN until closer to 6 months. LO2 was much smaller at birth, so she needed the extra calories.

8 & 6 weeks. They nursed for what felt like hours before bedtime.

Close to 5 months. He dropped it on his own. I would have kept up the feedings until 9 months and then weaned him off but luckily he dropped the last feed on his own.

@Mrs tartan: Around 8.5 months. We just started offering less and less (bottle fed) at his night wakings starting at 6 months, and eventually he decided it wasn't worth it. He will rarely do a night wakening at 11 months now, but if he does, I know it's because he's truly hungry.

DS1 - 4 months
DS2 - 5 months
They did it all their own and began STTN. Prior to that if they woke up, I fed them. They both just gradually dropped feeds.

I stopped offering bottles when she woke up at around 6 months but sometimes she wont settle without some milk, even at 15 months, so we break out the bottle! She usually has one drink per night...

My 7 month old still eats once at night. He's slept through on multiple occasions, so I know that he CAN go all night, but I'm not ready to wean him yet. Hopefully he will do it on his own. If not, I will think about when to wean -- 9-12 months perhaps.
persimmon / 1328 posts
I did it at just over 7 months. I started by reducing the length of feeds, then I just stopped, and would rock him back to sleep any time he woke. It was quite early but he was storming up through the centiles, and when he got up for the day he wasn't hungry for hours so I felt the time was right.

about 5.5 months old. She started dropping one on her own, then i started reducing the amount of formula she got every night until it was down to 1 ounce and then i just subbed in a paci.

DS #1, it was around 8-9 months. We did CIO around 6 months. I would still feed him during any wakeups but he dropped them on his own.
DS#2 is 5 months and wakes 1-2 times a night to feed and I will feed until he drops them on his own.

20 or so months! LO didn't drop her night feeds until she upped her solids enough to compensate for bf'ing less during the daytime.
pear / 1693 posts
I night weaned at 12 months. She would have happily continued to nurse multiple times a night if I hadn't.
pineapple / 12053 posts
We night weaned at 12.5 months with CIO. I never forced her to drop feedings before that.

Timely question-I was going to post something similar!
LO is 7 months, and she is still waking up to eat at least 2 times every night. I know that at least once, she is genuinely hungry, because she is draining me. The other time, it's hit or miss. Sometimes, she'll snack for a while and pass out, but other times, she really does want to eat. We've had to delay solids a bit, so I think that's part of it.
Sigh...we'll sleep someday...right?
pomegranate / 3601 posts
He quit all nightfeeds on his own at 11m when one day he just started STTN. We didn't do anything to support it (except to always offer a bottle of water before nursing him - no idea if that had any effect).
