My husband and I are probably going to be buying a house this spring, but we're also saving for baby expenses (including homebirth OR a Tricare Basic funded birth.) I'm trying to figure out how much we need other than the house-specific expenses.
So far, I know I want a fridge, a chest freezer, a stove, a lawnmower, and a grill when we have a newborn. We already have a washer and dryer. What other appliances/tools, small and large, were essential when you had a newborn/your first home?

I would say my microwave and dishwasher are essential. The convenience is just too good to give up.

you listed all the must haves--fridge and microwave. I LOVE my toaster oven, blender. Could do without my dishwasher.

I need the dishwasher, too many dishes to deal with! I have gotten by without a microwave and actually don't miss it.
Most used appliances this past year: coffee machines (2), electric tea kettle with concealed heating element, toaster, steam sterilizer and bottle warmer.

When DH and I were renting I was OK with not having a dishwasher. But once we bought a house, it was a must! Because lets face it, you dont NEED, NEEED it....but it does make things soooooo much easier! Other than that it sounds like you have the rest.

If you are trying to cut back, I bet you could do without a chest freezer and grill at first. You might even be able to do without a lawnmower for a season and pay a neighborhood kid to do it for you. I'd add a dishwasher and microwave to the list, but if you are already used to living without a dishwasher it might not be that bad.

@mamabolt: The grill and freezer are with a newborn in mind - my husband can't cook, but he can grill. I spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours per day cooking. I know better than to try to pull off that kind of thing with an infant, but I'm not ready to give up my food standards because my husband doesn't know the difference between "grilled cheese" and "cheese microwaved on toast".

The dishwasher literally saved our relationship. I could never ever live without one any longer. If it broke, and we needed to wait for repair or to replace it I would go and buy paper plates and plastic forks and knives to eat with. DH is such a messy kitchen person and I H.A.T.E. cleaning up the kitchen after him.
