I'm really cheap about turning on the heat and AC. I need to work on everything else!

A lot! DH makes fun of me because I don't buy cereal unless it's on sale. But it's not a NEED for me, so I just don't want to spend the money.

When we found out I was pregnant, DH subscribed to Sunday papers so we could start clipping coupons. I'm not an extreme couponer, but I will never pay full price on toothpaste, body wash and razors ever again by buying them during sale and combining it with coupons.

House stuff, i'm a bargain finder, and am currently waiting for my comforter I want to go on sale
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
Almost everything, lol. I refuse to buy clothes that aren't on sale/no coupon, we buy store brands of most groceries, and my A/C doesn't go below 77 I'm definitely not extreme, but we have to be very frugal to stay in budget, so I've gotten pretty good at it!

Everything. Seriously. Quality food is what we splurge on occasionally!
bananas / 9227 posts
I'm cheap. I buy most meats on sale, stock pile them, portion and freeze them. I menu plan (if you can even call it that) on season ability and sales. I don't buy clothes unless there's a sale + promo. I research and plan ahead for our vacations to get the best deal.
I pretty much buy everything on sale and if it's not necessary, I'll think about it waaaaay too much and not buy enough (like the foxgloves and delphiniums I should have bought more of)!!
pomegranate / 3204 posts
@autumnlove: haha me too! I will do everything possible to avoid turning on the AC, our electricity bill sky rockets when AC is on!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I'm frugal about clothing. I don't like to buy clothes that are full priced.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
Clothes! And shoes. Replacing both happens like, once every 5 years. It's gross. Shopping for maternity clothes was equal parts amazing and horrifying because I haven't bought this much crap at once basically ever.
nectarine / 2667 posts
We are about the heater and A/C too (well, we don't technically have an A/C). A common refrain in our house is "Put on a sweater!" in regards to any complaining about not having something that's not completely necessary.
I think we're pretty frugal in most areas. We don't spend money we don't have and we don't have too much money But we let ourselves splurge on things that are important, especially travel.

Clothes. I don't buy anything unless it's on sale. And cereal, like Artbee.
pomegranate / 3329 posts
Clothes, if it isn't on sale I don't buy it. I splurge on fresh produce, I'm cheap about snack food (again if it's not on sale NO GO!)
I hate turning the heater on, my husband and son are always freezing though. I'm losing that battle, when the bill is high I hand it to my husband.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Haha oh man...clothes, food, shoes, books, cleaning products, heat/AC (electric in general)...I like better quality things, for the right price, so I will hunt for it. LO still wears name brand clothes, but I get them at a consignment store, I just can't pay full price. Like you, with the heat I'm always bumping it down, and someone else is always turning it up!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@autumnlove: i'm the opposite of you... i need to feel comfortable with AC/heat and will make sacrifices in other areas to make it happen!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@LuLu Mom: ugh. we need a new comforter set OR duvet set SO badly. But cali king is SO expensive I haven't bit the bullet for YEARS. Where do you look?
pineapple / 12053 posts
almost everything except where we live (close to the beach!) and our food (we like good fresh foods).
bananas / 9628 posts
ummm.... everything? i'm frugal, but not cheap. i like nice things & we like to go out/away, but we wait until we can find a deal on what we want. there are some things i refuse to pay for- like toothpaste, i will never pay for toothpaste again. i got 9 tubes of crest prohealth this week, it's the kind i like, and we will use it for the next 9 month & hopefully sometime between now & then i'll find another deal on it & stock up because i'm not paying $3 a tube for it if i don't have to!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@mrs. bird: ok, spill it, how did you accomplish the toothpaste deal?
I have a bunch of gift baskets I would like to fill up for a volunteer obligation!

I don't know if I'm frugal or not. I used to be so frugal that I'm convinced it's how we saved up for our down payment on our condo. I'm partial to store brands for some groceries and most toiletries. I really like Up and Up products from Target. Though, I didn't like their diapers or wipes which I get cheaper on Amazon Prime with Pampers products.

I'm frugal about clothes. I don't mind spending money on quality pieces but I will keep those pieces for *years* so I feel it's money well spent. Outside of good work clothes, I mostly shop at Goodwill, consignment shops, ebay, etc. I refuse to spend full price for LO's clothes too; we're all about hand-me-downs, consignment, ebay and outlet shopping (with coupons).
I'm also frugal about wine haha; I won't spend more than $15/bottle for wine unless it's a gift for someone else and I'm very controlling of the heat. Of course, since even with keeping our house no more than 68 and keeping the heat lower during the day, etc. our heating bills are over $500/month all winter and over $250/month in the warm months. Bah, can't win there!
coconut / 8861 posts
@artbee: I love to buy cereal on sale or the house brand for it. I'm convinced that I'm going to be the mom that doesn't tell their kids that they've been having store brands for years by putting them in plastic containers. Over the years, I've come to like house/store brands more than name brands.
pear / 1974 posts
Ugh not too much I am the worst. Soda? I don't even drink it much but I will only buy them when they're like 5 12-packs for $11 at shoprite. Oh actually, like @artbee: cereal - I cannot buy my fiber one cereal anywhere except Target because otherwise they are always like $4.99, but then again I just bought myself a $4.12 cup of coffee, I suck.
coconut / 8430 posts
I never pay full price on clothes! I also never order a drink at restaurants. I don't drink alcohol and it pains me to pay $4 for a soda so I drink water... I figure its healthier anyhow!
bananas / 9628 posts
@looch: target =) buy a special value 3pk for $5.99 & get a $5 gift card, use a $1 off coupon, then repeat 2 more times using the gift card you got previously, 9 tubes =)
coconut / 8430 posts
@mrs. bird: wow good job! Even after following coupon blogs I still have trouble replicating these deals!
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
@regberadaisy: Try Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross. I know they sometimes have them.
papaya / 10473 posts
Umm, everything? It pains me to pay full price for anything. I will splurge on fun things though, like decorating LO's nursery.
clementine / 896 posts
Pretty much anything for myself. If it's not on sale, I ain't getting it!
pomelo / 5509 posts
Electricity/energy. For the whole time that SO and I have lived together, it's been my responsibility to pay the electric bill. I take pride in being able to keep it low every month!
Also, clothes. I was just saying this morning that I have 5 pair of jeans that fit me - two are missing buttons and one has a broken zipper, but I can't bring myself to buy more.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Most consumer products. I don't buy clothes that aren't on sale and anythign that isn't an absolute necessity I buy the cheapest option available. I'm also not a brand-namer at all for things like personal care products - give me the store brand all the way.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
I do splurge on our comfort though. We bought a really expensive mattress recently that wasn't on sale and I will book at a more expensive hotel when we go on vacation. And I usually avoid red-eyes or connections, I prefer to pay more for a shorter and more comfortable trip.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
I go back and forth, but on big purchases, I obsess about getting the very best possible deal so I never feel like I am getting ripped off. See my recent posts about Buy Buy Baby coupons and the like. I still want to get the expensive item I've chosen, I just want to make sure I'm getting a good deal.
@Modern Daisy: We just bought a really expensive mattress and I am SOOOOOOOO glad we did. They don't really ever go on sale, and I don't care, it was worth every. single. penny. I wake up and my pregnant back feels fine, gets worse throughout the day, then blissfully, I lay back down on my awesome bed. We are both legitimately obsessed with it.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
@Foodnerd81: I totally agree. We couldn't believe how much we had just spent on a mattress but it has changed our lives lol! It was good timing too because we bought it shortly after finding out I was pregnant, so at least I'll get to enjoy it during the most crucial time.

i'm frugal on buying clothes and booking airline tickets. I always search and search for the absolute best deal! I used to be frugal about pretty much everything, but DH has rubbed off on me and made me realize i don't need to fret so much about spending a few dollars here and there. and now we spend way too much $, haha.
watermelon / 14206 posts
Everything, pretty much. When it comes to groceries, I have my few favorite brands I won't budge on, but other than that I'm always trying to find things cheaper.
pear / 1787 posts
Everything. I try not to buy anything that's not on sale, and I don't buy anything that's not a necessity. I just went clothes shopping last weekend for the first time in years, but only because I had some birthday money. Everything I bought was on sale!
