LO is 13 months old and has begun to throw things. I understand his need to do that, but I don't want hm throwing anything and everything! How do I set limits for this? What kind of limits do you set? What do you allow your LO to throw and what do you not allow? How will they differentiate? I guess I always wonder how they will know why it's okay to throw one thing but not another. I should give our LOs more credit, eh?

It depends on her mood while she's throwing. If it's out of anger or defiance, it is an immediate time out (anything aggressive is an immediate time out). If it's a playful throw, we will give her a warning and tell her that we don't like it and to not throw.

Subscribing my lo is 13 months and throws his food and drink off the high chair all the time.

Same as @Mrs. High Heels: if its in aggression it's an immediate time out.
We let c know that we only throw balls outside, and there's no throwing in the house.

@cranberryapple: mine is doing better at 16 months but she is too immature to respond well to firm discipline (other babies her age totally can, she is just a young 16 months).
So, we are still doing distraction and techniques like taking the item she shouldn't throw and giving her something she can. -
At 13 months it's harder to set those rules. For that age what we would do when he threw something I didn't want him to I would say "that is not for throwing" and take it away. And then give him something he can throw, "here, you can throw this ball instead!"

@stargal: mine too. I find it often (50%) means she's had enough and I haven't seen her sign all done - she gets very angry with me if there's any hesitation in meeting her demands!
she hasn't thrown other things but she's pretty feisty so it's probably coming!With my son, we played throwing balls, a lot. He loved throwing balls for our dog. But we gently reminded him we don't throw anything else if he threw other things.

I showed and explained what was ok and what was not. For example, I would show him to throw a ball in the direction of the laundry basket and not at the table. Or, instead of throwing X object, I would say we don't throw X, but you can throw this ball instead. I feel like DS truly understood simple things from a young age and would generally follow through.
