Charlie's teacher invited me to read a book to his class! I'm excited but want to make sure that I pick a good book... maybe one that has a lot of interaction, repetition and call and response? Something that is fun and participative!
Some guidelines: I am good at making animal sounds and at being corny, but I am not good at accents or falsettos. Charlie's classmates are 3 to 4 years old, mostly on the higher end….
What book should I read to Charlie's pre-K class... any suggestions?

What about "If you give a mouse a cookie?" I know it's a hit in my son's preschool class of 3-4 year olds!

Here are a few great recent titles: Oh No! By Candace Fleming and Eric Rohmann (fun animal sounds and the kids can say the Oh No parts); Let's Go for a Drive by Mo Willems (really anything by Mo Willems, but the voices in this can be really funny); This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen; Any of the Pete the Cat books but specifically I've had success w/Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons lately; Z is for Moose by Kelly Bingham is fabulous but maybe a little bit more appropriate for Kindergarten since it is a bit dependent on starting to knowing the alphabet...This is my job, so I literally could go on forever...

@Bao: he has a few, but I think that he tends to enjoy the books after we've read them a bunch of times… So I was thinking that here, I should pick a book that can be enjoyed the very first time a kid hears it?
We had a sleepover a while ago and books with sounds and repetition did best! So I was thinking maybe that would be a hit? Not sure!!

@mrbee: I don't know specifically because I haven't been there when they read it during story time. I've actually never actually read it! lol But they loved it so much that they made it the "book of the month" and created a whole curriculum around it. They'll be baking cookies, cleaning with different materials (sponges, mops), playing with tape, learning about colors (crayons).
Maybe it was the way it was read? I don't know!

The pre-K kids at my school really enjoy Read to Tiger by S.J. Fore and Bark, George by Jules Ffeifer. Anything by Mo Willems is usually a hit as well.

More ideas (I LOVE picture books SO): Tuesday by David Weisner is a lot of fun (even though there aren't many words, the kids I've read to love to watch the flying frogs). ... Yo! Yes? By Chris Raschka is fun to read and very sweet. ... My 4 year old nephew has so much fun reading Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman, Fish and Snail by Deborah Freedman is new and really fun...

@mossyslane: I love Trashy Town! I find that about halfway through the book, the kids start chiming in on the "Dump it in, Smash it down, Drive around the trashy town" part.

For a great Moo book, you might try Click, Clack, Moo by Doreen Cronin. It's really funny (though it does have a few big words)...

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub! Seriously my favorite kid's book of all time. All of my sisters and I LOVED it, and I can't wait to read it to our baby!

The only caveat is that it may not be a great group book, because the pictures are half of the fun! But it's still a fantastic book.

Each class that I read Barack Obama's "letter to my daughters" in gave it rave reviews, but it's not call and response, just a nice book.

I love Pete the Cat books!
Another book I love is "Not A Box"...the pictures are simple but the kids love calling out what the box is representing...I think it's a good book for little ones that are starting to use their imagination

@LovelyPlum: That is a fabulous book. It has always reminded me of Ellie, who would stay in the tub for-ever if no one made her get out. Both of our girls love it!
Some of our favorite read-alouds are by Chris Van Allsburg. Ellie particularly likes Probuditi! This Is Not My Hat is also a really fun book. We really enjoyed the book Under Ground by Denise Fleming-- at the end there is a really nice explanation of all the creatures on the previous pages. It's a nice companion to outdoor play, because we have encountered many of the creatures in our exploration. The Jane Yolen/Mark Teague Dinosaur books are favorites around here, and are fun for younger school-aged kids.

I like this book titled "Forget-Me-Not" Friendship Blossoms by Michael Broad, it's a book about friendships. Really cute story and colorful pictures.

Either "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" or "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub." The illustrations in the second are amazing and it's got a repeating story structure.
